Confirmed Signing Caleb Yirenkyi (1 Viewer)

And yet since hes joined weve seen him drive forward and get an assist for Tchaouna from playmaking, and a fabulous inventive flick vs Plymouth for Awoniyi.

He is much more than a destroyer like you are painting
Neither of those assists would be classed as play making. The flick was outrageous, the assist for Tchaouna was a good assist but one any midfield would make. He did give the ball away virtually every time he had it against man city under zero pressure. But forget the basics

It's fine you are always right, his previous manager is wrong.

Can you give the formal approved definition of 'play making'

A playmaker in football (soccer) is a player who controls the flow of the team's play, using great vision and passing to create goal-scoring chances. [1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playmaker)Core
Role and Skills
Vision: They see passes and spaces that other players miss.
Passing: They deliver accurate short or long balls to turn possession into shots on goal.
Ball Control: They keep calm and hold onto the ball under pressure from the other team. [1] (What is a playmaker in football and how can you master the role? 5 key tips), [2] (Playmaker roles | Guide to Football), [3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playmaker)Types of Playmakers
Deep-Lying Playmaker: They play near their own defenders to start attacks from the back and set the team's speed (often called a regista). [1] (https://guidetofootball.com/tactics/playmaker-roles/)Advanced Playmaker: They play higher up the pitch, right behind the main striker, in the space between the enemy's midfield and defense (the classic number 10). [1] (https://guidetofootball.com/tactics/playmaker-roles/)Wide Playmaker: They start on the wings or sides of the pitch, cutting inside to pass or shoot. [1] (Playmaker roles | Guide to Football)

Grimes is a playmaker. Everything goes through him

Fair enough, I've not seen anything in the few games he's played so far or his highlights reel to suggest that. And from the inside track from his coach in Denmark, they very much badge him as a ball winner not a play maker.

From his Coach

" We really needed to spend some time in the first year with him in terms of getting him more calm on the ball and his positioning and so on. Now he is at a good level on the ball but he is especially good without the ball. That is definitely what he is best at."
...

Riget talks of the "power that he can bring into the duels and put pressure on the opponent winning second balls" - qualities that are going to be crucial for Coventry under Frank Lampard. As a newly-promoted club, that off-the-ball work is going to be key.

...

"First and foremost, I have no doubt on the physical side. His ability to run, his power in the duels, it is really quite unique. He is ready for the Premier League. But the time on the ball will be more limited, for sure."

...

Yirenkyi's in-possession game is improving, although Riget concedes that more work is required if he is to truly thrive in the Premier League. "I still think that needs some further development."

Let me rephrase - I see that he has the instinct of a playmaker, he has the vision. He just can’t execute what he wants to do yet and plays at a frenetic tempo.

I can agree with that. He has zero calmness on the ball, everything is 100 mph. I think ultimately he will be a box-to-box 8.

Thanks, an American definition of what they think a playmaker is

Stop being a nob, you know full well what a play maker is. It's the player the that dictates play, usually deep lying (like Anderson) but can also be in the 10 (like Messi or Odegard). Everything goes through them, they set the tempo. Calm on the ball, orchestrate the game.

Grimes is a play maker, Hamer is a play maker, Eccles isn't a player maker, neither is Onyeka.

You're just being pedantic - even his previous manager says he's is more of a ball winner

I dont believe a number 6 can be a playmaker. I'd say its someone who produces quality leading to goals. I rarely see that from grimes

I get a feeling none of these players are his and it's a big fuck you to king and dean Austin for getting me players who aren't ready for the prem
I don’t think so personally. A lot of the jorunos have said how Lampard pushed a lot for the players and how involved he was in selling the club to them.

Think he has his favourites

How many assists?

Is Nathan wood a playmaker, or Josh Tymon?
Nathan Wood isn't also in the top 5 for chances created. Josh Tymon arguably displays some playmaking ability from left back with his quality but isn't in an area of the pitch to get on the ball enough.

How many assists did Paul Scholes get in his career

Thats what was missing yesterday no body was winning the ball in midfield and Btighton were passing through Grimes and Onyeka

Yeah in the championship you clown, I was his biggest fan in the championship but he should be nowhere near our 11 now
No argument there, just disputing people saying Grimes roles isn't a playmaker. It's literally why Lampard signed him to playmake from a deep midfield position

Preface this by saying Onyeka and Yirenki should be the starting DM/CMs until at least January but food for thought.

I think he naturally is unsuited to play in the 3-4-3. Naturally doesn’t suit his strengths as a player. Whether or not he’s good enough is one thing but feel we plugging square circles in round holes with the tactic played. Rudoni the other one imo

It’s a fucking joke, if he carries on playing grimes he can get sacked when we carry on not winning games, it will be his own fault. Love grimes for what he did for us last season but he’s not good enough to start in the premier league
Yeah. My sentiments exactly. Look, I love FL and what he did to get us up but that has been and gone. No sentiment in the harsh reality of Premier League football and to be honest his team selection, other than Man City away has been baffling to say the least. you have to wonder how much credit as he banked with Doug if this carries on. Yes, they were all on the bus getting pissed together when we had the parade but I don't think Doug will rest on his laurels after yesterday. Not saying he is getting sacked anytime soon but you have to wonder what Doug King is thinking.

I agree the shape didn't work 343 with EMC and Rudoni wide left us 3 Vs 2 in midfield, and meant both wingbacks ended up in a flat 5.

I mean, I agree with you that Onyeka is nothing like Yirenkyi but of course a 6 can be a playmaker.

As I’ve said elsewhere, the advanced midfielders need far more intelligence regarding when to drop wide and when to remain central. Rudoni has the capacity to do it but seems like he hasn’t got a clue what he should be doing. Loads of times yesterday he almost stayed out the way rather than giving good passing lanes centrally. EMC I don’t think has the positional intellect to carry out the role.

Agreed, when we used to play the box when O'Hare and as injured, both Hamer and Allen had the tactical nous to know where they needed to be when we didn't have the ball. Nice and compact in the midfield stifling the opposition, winning the ball back and then hitting teams on the counter.

The kid is only 20 years old. The problem is you’ve got players that don’t have Premier league experience, even elite top league experience.. if you watch him against England in the World Cup, the game was just buzzing around him with the movement of the elite England players. He needs good coaching, but the raw ingredients are there for a good player, and he does have a vision.

It’s difficult, isn’t it because you sign players from abroad, knowing the wages will be half of what you would pay a player with Premier league experience.

One of Doug's 'bankers' for a good profit next season???? Cynical maybe, but it feels a lot like that's what's driven some of the signings this window!!!
