I believe it’s PFA rules each Championship club has to have one ageing pro earning lots and contributing little, and now Waghorn has gone.

Just a side , has any club ever let go its whole forward line before ?

Pretty sure we did in the League Two season, although it’s kind to call that shambles that played for us in 16/17 a forward line

I think the key thing is this guy participated in nearly 40 games last season albeit off bench a lot. This isn't a 37 year old who is falling to bits, he's clearly still in impeccable shape. He's much older than Godden and yet we may get even more minutes from him (if that was to be tested). I think his experience would be super beneficial for us, a player who's been there and done it and with players like Hamer assisting, may surprise us with a few more goals than we'd expect.

I'd actually prefer to keep Godden however just because it offers that continuity but I don't think Sharp would be a bad signing.

Marvin Sordell was the only player that season who played somewhat well, thats why he got given a contract in the league above halfway through the season then I suppose

Strikes me more as a signing to provide leadership to the squad and a young frontline.

These type of signings never really enthuse me. The players age means they're going to be a bit part player but often the wages they demand don't reflect that diminished status. We've been bitten quite a few times by these 'experienced' signings before - we've looked an dfelt we've got them a couple of years too late and they're very much on the wane and that is the vibe I get from Sharp. I guess I'd rather take the risk of the younger player who could develop, though I undestand having a entire set of forwards who are relatively inexperienced is itself risky.

I'm not against Godden going if we can get a fee for him, given his age, injury record and contract situation but signing another ageing player to replace them isn't for me.

Expect a lot of that will go on Sharp's wages and signing on fee!

Slade didn’t like him, offered him to Burton for Beavon in return - another one of his master strokes

It fucks me off that squad actually won a trophy, they were an utter disgrace in the league and I genuinely had a burning dislike for some of those players - They got away with murder for winning that poxy trophy

Isn’t Sharp and Simon Moore really good friends? Not that that would really influence anything.

Tbf while I'm not enthusiastic about this, I get it. Let's go with the assumption we get Vente in and Godden leaves because he's at an age we can still just about get some money for him. Simms and Vente first choice front 2... what do we realistically want on the bench up front when you consider the amount of money that still needs to be spent elsewhere?
Best you can hope for is a young punt and an experienced pro. Sharp is the latter.

He must be on very high wages unless he’s prepared to take a serious cut.

That would be my worry.

Wasn’t sure at first but it’s one of them where if it goes well will look a very clever signing by Robins. Can see his experience might be invaluable.

2 goals in 38 games? Not really prolific is he, Wagehorn mk2.
Blades fans mostly agree it was time for him to go, so there’s the truth of it, I’d avoid him and keep Godden, if he’ll stay to be on the bench.

The assumption that players always maintain their earning levels from contract to contract, especially when they get old, is one of my peeves tbh. He's 37 without a club, he's not going to command too much.

If he will be on modest wage (he has already made a decent wonga in his career), then as a squad player it could be shrewd. If we have Simms and Vente, who are 2 young player, someone like Sharp would be a good role model.

I just can't recall the last veteran we got that was anything but a disaster. Not sure on this one, I'd rather it wasn't a deal but if it is, I'll trust Robins thinking over mine.

Joe Cole wasn’t terrible, just thought he was on a different wave length, always remember one game where he picked a great ball out - Madders read it but nobody else did.

didn’t think Sam Ricketts was a bad player either

Agree with Joe Cole, he looked a level above what we had at the time.
