@betterdays .... if this proposed deal is correct I assume we have not only an exclusive option with Arsenal but the player is also obligated to join us too if we take up the option ??

Don't know the details of the deal but I would have been surprised if it wasn't a loan for the period he has left on his contract at Arsenal
A bit like O'Hare last year

No doubt we will get a bit of info when it's eventually announced

Another loan we will be sweating about on here if he has a blinder this season to watch him end up out of our reach #Walsh2

So the same timeframe as people on twitter then

One of the Arsenal publications said his contract is until 2022.

I don't think we would be agreeing a fee if we could get him for a free next summer

Why does everybody act like we only receive money from transfers in instalments but pay out our fees in one lump?

Just a theory. Is the loan with option to buy essentially a permanent but if we get relegated he is basically free to go and we don’t have to keep him on the books. He could be on big wages for us,potentially toward 10k per week, and with the new salary cap in league 1 that would be unsustainable and would take up a big chunk of the allowance.

The other comment made was arsenal would pay some of his wages this season so maybe that’s why

Possibly. Don’t really see why they would pay for the loan this season though if we are buying next season. It wouldn’t be to develop their player anymore?

If we got relegated any player already under contract only counts as the league average.

Is it possible that the lad was reluctant to sign permanently and this deal is the only way he would come?

Didn’t realise that. Would have thought high wages would be unsustainable anyway if we were to get relegated putting the salary cap aside

Yeah this deal would actually be worse for SCMP, but poss better for the wage bill.

You can’t have it both ways and you know it...

Incoming fees will likely be structured and outgoing fees will likely be structured.

Payment terms negotiated depending on cash position obviously but to pretend all of our outgoing fees are paid up front but our incoming fees are in instalments is just nonsense

If this guy was reluctant to sign & there were issues around his willingness to come, don’t you think MR would have pulled out? It’s a big chunk of money to spend on someone who’s heart isn’t in it when you could use the cash elsewhere

That’s usually his point and he’s usually wrong but he’s saying McCallum didn’t go for £3m as reported but closer to £1.5m.

Which may well be true and have paid for Hamer. Which unless Westbrooke went for £1m probably means Walker money has come from elsewhere. Or was saved up. Or has come from our promotion.

Do we know what Robins net spend is so far? I suspect it’s very little.

A guide to Ben Sheaf for Coventry City fans from Arsenal and Doncaster

Ben Sheaf will join Coventry City on a season-long loan with a £750,000 option to buy, so what sort of player are they getting?

It could be arsenal wanted more money for him, so agreed on a loan with us paying his wages with the view to a permanent switch.

If true, I think it's a shrewd move bringing Sheaf in on a loan with an option to buy. It's been well documented that the EFL have implemented a salary cap for all their League One and Two, with League One in particular being restricted to a fixed £2.5m spend on bonuses, wages, agent fees and other moneys paid to players. Focusing on League One, this is in place of the SCMP regulations that governed (or rather attempted to govern) financial sustainability and longevity of all members within the league. Given that our wage bill is likely to be considerably higher than last year's, I presume we are now subsequently exceeding this cap quite considerably - and in the event of CCFC dropping back down into League One (hopefully not), it's not improbable to suggest that we would still likely be far above the £2.5m threshold.

So, could it be that Robins and the backroom staff are simply thinking ahead, just in case we do in fact find ourselves in a relegation spot come the end of the season. I can't imagine that Sheaf is on small wages so it makes sense to structure the deal as a loan, with an option to buy just in case affordability becomes difficult in the event we are relegated - especially if we cannot move him on for whatever reason. After all, every transfer comes with its risks. Sheaf could rupture his ACL in true CCFC fashion or his form might plummet as we saw from signings such as Ogogo. Then we're inevitably stuck with his wages for the foreseeable. Hence why I believe this to be a wise move from the club.

Personally I cannot see this particular deal being made to avoid the current P&S (profit and sustainability rules) implemented in the Championship. To my knowledge the current rules state that each club is not permitted to lose over £13m per season over four years - (it used to be three but it has recently changed to four). It's highly doubtful that even in the current situation we're losing that much and regardless,
clubs will now be reporting on a four-year period that covers 2017/18-2020/21 instead of the three years that cover 2017/18-2019/20. The club's accounts have shown that we're definitely not losing that much, so for that particular scenario we're in the clear.

Apologies for the 'essay', just my little speculative take on it!

By all reports we wanted him on a perm I think the player had issues with coming here for one reason or another.

Moody one for me this not sure if he’s fully committed to even coming here.

You do keep saying this for some reason.

How's about this; if he's smiling in his scarf photo with Robins later, you'll drop it yer?

Which reports? And please don't say the ones from 'EFL Zone'

I assure you, if Robins caught whiff that a potential target had issues with coming here, I can almost guarantee he wouldn't be here.

He wants to play for Arsenal and is finding it hard to leave. Shouldn't we applaud his loyalty?
He doesn't want to give up on his dream is all, give the lad a break.
