Bassette

That would be valid if he didn’t have good depth at ST. The front 3 on Saturday after EMC came off had a combined total of 46 goals last season. The primary issue we have is that we did not fashion one clear cut chance for one of them.

It’s not so bad calling out strikers if they’re missing big chances - which happened last season. The more concerning thing is that we’ve got all this talent and not providing them any chances.

It’s not that he doesn’t trust Bassette, he just trust the more senior Simms and BTA - which is to be expected.
And this is because of our weak midfield, just think how many chances we would create with someone like Hamer playing

Agreed with both of you, which is why I was in favour of signing him. I just understand why DK would push back to Robins that the team should be good enough to perform at a certain level until a big money signing can be made.

Leadership gives intangible benefits to a group of players, stuff that isn’t reflected in statistics directly. This team needs leaders because they’re a young group - stuff we all know.

In relation to James, is it wise to pay a 4th choice CM 12-15k per week (Saddles quote) who won’t be match fit until January anyway? The answer to that depends on if we will sign a CM in Jan or not. We seen how Torp struggled for fitness being brought in off the back of preseason in Norway last season.
When we got James a few seasons back he had not long come back from a long injury/injuries and he done a decent job then, at the very least when we have flagging central midfielders he can come on for the last 20 minutes and use his experience to get us over the line hopefully, rather than Robins thinking ohh we need a change then looking at the bench and thinking fuck it may as well stay as we are

Simms doesn’t necessarily work on confidence or high energy running - he’s a convenient scapegoat when things aren’t going well. People instinctively like BTA and Bassette because they run more but their output is less than Simms. If we’re only going to create 0.6 xG a game at 0.05 xG per shot, we won’t win many games because those statistics tell the story.

The bottom line is that we’re not creating good enough chances for our forwards. When Robins spoke about players taking ‘the easy option’ on the ball, he was talking about the creators in our team, the midfield (including Rudoni) and our fullbacks. There’s been many times this season where forwards have made runs from deep behind defence and we’ve not took the risk. For every glorious pass to Bassette (v Spurs) there’s been several chances we’ve passed up on.
You say "we are not creating enough chances" we have the most shot per game in our league according to footy stats as for runs many times I see Eccles and Sheaf looking up for them and having to play the sideways ball.

That said, in games where we have created good chances, they’ve nearly all been squandered.

I feel people are slightly exaggerating how bad Simms has been 'this season'. He had a good game against Watford, scored and was then promptly dropped. He could have had 2 assists against Spurs if other players had put away chances. Since then he has had a couple of minutes against Blackburn when the game was dead and has been subbed into two games where we were already playing terrible.
It’s convenient scapegoating when we’ve have had several games. BTA played upfront for most of Saturday and we still lost, despite the ‘effort’ he put in.

EMC and Wright have missed a few chances, Watford (A) springs to mind because we should’ve been out of sight before the equaliser/should’ve won it in stoppage time. The same could be said of Oxford (H). Outside of those 2 games, I’m struggling to think of league games where we had lots of good chances. Blackburn, we scored 3 good goals but I don’t think any of them were actually ‘clear cut’ - our xG was 1.13 that game and 0.05 per shot (the same as Sheff Weds on the per shot basis).

Stoke, Leeds, Swansea, Norwich, Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday I can’t recall a ‘big chance’ we created from open play.

The stats, as far as I can see, suggests we’re just not making good chances as a team rather than our strikers being poor.

We had a great chance in the opening minute at Stoke and had a pretty high xG chance against Swansea where Bassette hit the bar. I appreciate not bucketloads but we weren’t a very clinical side last season either

Our 2 best chances v Stoke were in the second half, Binks and Simms, both from corners:

As for Swansea, you’re right - I thought both Bassette and Rudoni’s big chances were from set pieces.

The Stoke one is probably being missed by the fact Simms didn’t even get a shot away if memory serves.

Seen him a fair few times on the Pre Season Photos and the Behind the Scenes. I know it doesn't mean anything but he has not been bombed out as I would have expected because surely a bombed out player wouldn't be taken on pre season tour

I think FIFA has changed the rules and you’re no longer allowed bomb squads.

If you are Bassette, you must be thinking I need to stay at this club. He didn't overly impress with his loan moves last season. I did think there was a good player there in his early games. But towards the end of the 24/25 season his cameos off the bench were horrendous.

That weakens our hand somewhat with Bassette. If we don't register him - We'll lose him on a free.
I don't think that's what the new bomb squad rules mean. He's still under contract until 2028 and ours to sell or keep as long as he is given a fair chance to train, it's our choice whether to register/play him.

It's just to stop teams trying to force players out by treating them like 2nd class employees, to be fair it's a shitty practice and needed sorting.

Nah he needs a fresh start. Lampard doesn’t rate him, it would probably take a horrendous injury crisis for him to get a chance again here.

If anybody thinks Bassette is a hidden gem who is going to set the Premier League alight they are deluded. He will be gone one way or another.

Same could be said about Da Silva and Asante. They'll both figure heavily next season, who would have thought that?
At least they contributed last season and got us to the Premier League. You may not want to build your side around them. But both could contribute in some way, where as Bassette won’t.

About 8 months ago the majority of fans were saying they'd burn their season tickets if Da Silva ever plays another game.

Before last pre season Da Silva, Eccles, Allen, Bidwell, Latibeaudier and Simms were all going to be sold by Lampard, according to some of our fans, as they weren’t good enough.

The difference is all the above have some provenance. Bassette has none and an attitude that stinks. He has shown no progress on his loans. He is nowhere near Championship level let alone Premier League.

He’s nowhere near good enough for us. I’d cut our losses and let him go on a free at this point.

We don't know which players we're going to sell other than those offered a new contract.

We don't know which players we're going to sign and which position they will play.

BTA might be brought on late in games to run at tired legs. He might be sold. I would guess JDS will be kept as cover.

You’d have to think Bassette would be off. But we need someone to want to sign him. King will want his money back at least

He needs to move on for the sake of his own career. However I do think people forget we signed him as a teenager and the lad is only 21, he's got another 10 years + of a career, he will continue to develop and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it all clicks in a few years as a late developer and does really well somewhere. He has the attributes, he just very raw. You don't get in an U21s squad and a full international cap if you have nothing about you.

So good that nobody wants him, even after two loans with options to buy

I'd say that people like Bassette and BTA more because despite their technical shortcomings, they actually look like they could give a fuck, and they allways put a shift in.
Simms haa all the physical attributes to be an absolute beast, but the mentality of a dainty fucking wall flower.
Similar with Wright, he knows he can be a force at championship level, but you know after the first 10 minutes of a game which Wright has turned up.
In short none of our strikers are premier league quality, so id expect 2 to come in and at least 2 to go out before the window shuts.
If we stick with what we have, then I fear we are failing to prepare, and the massive step up in quality will be too much.
