Assessment of Carling Cup "run" (1 Viewer)

Well we are out which is frustrating however....

The positives I took from the evening were:

1. Haynes has the best delivery I have seen in a while from a young left footed defender.
2. Swanson looks very composed on the ball and will cause teams problems at this level.
3. Fleck is great on the ball and composed in tight areas, if we can build a midfield that gets the best out of him, we will dominate the tempo against lesser teams.
4. Miller scored and this will add to his confidence levels, after frankly what was an appalling attempt to score with just the keeper to beat.

On the negative side:

1. We looked like we struggled with 5-3-2 for long periods and in Jordan Clarke don't have a RWB good enough for that system. In a 5-3-2 good wing-backs who can defend and be potent attacking threats are key. We need to sign someone who can play this position well or we will struggle to make it work.
2. We lack a cutting edge and focal point up top. Miller scored but from what I saw from him and McQuid there is no way they will score enough to get us into the top 6. Tudgay is better and will come back into the team, but as we know to succeed in this league you need 2 forwards scoring 15+ goals to climb the table.
3. Finch - the lad looks weak physically and sadly his reading of the game was woeful, he backed off far too much and his pass completion stats were appalling.

All in all the scoreline was respectable and we were playing a team with more in most departments than us. But to make the top 6 we 100% MUST SIGN a forward, RWB, and a proper holding midfielder to give licence to Fleck and Swanson to go on the offensive.

Didn't watch it but I joined in with all the negativity earlier so I want to balance it out. I'm pleased we kept possession better in the second half and that there are some positives.

Criticising Finch seems unfair, debut at 16/17 against premier league opposition last year. Think he'll do okay in time to come.

When O'Brien, Swanson, Fleck had the ball with an outlet as well in the second half they looked good. Quite encouraging but they just did not get the ball. I think Burge got more passes into feet than they did

Lots of good observations ccfc1234

Over all: MEN AGAINST BOYS Cardiff didn't break sweat!!

Passing: Good for periods but at times very naive putting us under unnecessary pressure.

Formation: Not enough players prepared to boss there position, too timid (shows our inexperience in years and physical maturity). lightweight up top in first half. Miller 2nd half lifted things and gave us a target player and O' brine makes some good runs.

Haynes: Absolute sweet delivery for the goal. Looks good going forward. Has a lot to learn defensively. He actually typifies the the problems facing a Manager relying on youth.

The players who have come here and the youngsters who are trying to find their feet need time and support. Don't destroy them....save your anger for the real culprits SISU FISHER & CO!!!

Positive no cup run for the Sisu coffers this year and looking at that lot nobody to sell.

Negative Burge is awful his distribution is shocking and he is not commanding enough in his area.

The OP is focusing on top 6. I fear relegation.

I would say we already have someone in our squad, he just can't get in the team for whatever reason. His dad wasn't half bad either............

Just been on Cardiff's forum. Firstly I want to thank them for coming together to protest. I know half of it was for their own needs but to come together with us from a team of fans was great. Anyway on the forum they haven't really slagged us off as in 'they are shit' type but a lot of comments on fans who went generally said that they dominated the first half, took the foot off the pedal 2nd half until about 70mins when we then started to play). Said we were very poor and had no decent finishers. One fan said though that a fair score line would have been 6-2 to them. Really doesn't bode well for us does it. I didnt watch the game but my mate did and he said it was boring, we were doing nothing all game.

What do people think about giving Phillips a go at RWB and moving Jordan inside? Missed the game yesterday, but from what I've seen on the highlights Haynes deserves another go at LWB as well.

Yes to both. I'd take Willis out of the firing line and move Clarke back to centre back. If the 352 is kept Clarke is ideal as he can bring the ball out of defence.

The defence is sat too deep to accommodate Webster.

Not seen enough of Phillips to say yes or no but as I have seen enough of Clarke at RWB to know he's not cut out for the role why not. Before people think it I think Clarke is a good player but just not in the oppositions half of the pitch.

I'm with FP. When I've seen him play Phillips looks busier than Clarke to me, more likely to get up and down the line as a wing-back perhaps. I've no issue with Clarke, but he didn't have a good game last night, imho.
