I thought he was a bit of a terrior who would snap at ankles and not leave you alone...

Nothing in the sense of a traditional winger, the same as Bell - he has a good cross but he will not take anyone on. He keeps his position and offers width, but sometimes looked clueless the ball. Compare him and McSheffrey (on one of those elusive good days), who offers more attacking wise in that comparison.
Defensively he backtracks well but shirks the odd tackle.

Bottom line for me - He is a solid enough player, definitely did not deserve the treatment he got (in terms of on-field reasons) but will never set the world alight.
He kept his shape well too, he just did not offer that much going forward. I remember him at Doncaster/Bristol playing us and really standing out, then he came here and didn't/hasn't made that same impact. How many players can we say that about over the years?!
