This. It’s happened more recently too - in the Mogga L1 season we were briefly getting 17-18k, but then 5k evaporated immediately when the wheels came off.

I’ve come to dread one-off big crowds, because we always seem to underperform & I hate the moaning & whining from fair-weather fans.

Winds me up - they’re the first to complain when the Blackpool away and MK Dons away tickets sell out

I have a friend in the WMP - and rumour has it we (our fans) were on a red list when our away games are drawn,

High profile/high potential of trouble away games can be requested not at this time. He said that the police up north requested this.

He is assuming Sunderland away will he Tuesday next season.

I don't think it's harsh, I think as a city/surrounding area we genuinely must have the weakest fan base to glory in the country. I agree that to a level the product / demand will have a correlation, but if you look at the likes of Portsmouth, Sunderland, Bradford, and then even up to the likes of Leeds (I know they have a bigger history than we do), but they get huge numbers relative to us every week. Leeds averaged 24,000 the three years they were in League 1. Also have been run by shambolic owners, so can't even use that card.

Leeds has an aproximate population of 780,0000
4% =31200
Coventry 345,000 population
4% =13800
So nothing so special about Leeds support we are about on par

That's what I assumed too, but then Pompey are more trouble than us and they had a Saturday in Blackpool as did Sunderland. I think you're right on the Sunderland fixture though, almost certain that will be midweek and I'll probably give it a swerve.

Not really we have what - 25% regularly of that figure. That’s pitiful. Like someone said above - working on Saturdays and family commitments would go out the window if we were in the premier league.

28k went to Gillingham on the return to the Ricoh, we had 10k against Yeovil the following week.

Same as the play off Semi Final - 14k, that’s poor compared to the 38k we took to the final

What's the answer then? Ban non season ticket holders! Ask for us to be promoted to the prem to get attendance up?
Seriously though, this has happened for years and years, unfortunately it's a case of accept it as it ain't changing anytime soon.

We had saturdays at Blackpool and fleetwood a few years back. I think it depends on what the force can handle on particular weekends - I think they get a fixture list so many days/weeks in advance and they get to discuss (that I haven’t been told - I’m assuming)

Of course there’s give and takes with the police - they can’t dictate the whole fixture list, that’s why forces draft in police from the teams own district - the WMP have been called in to some away games around the countries and likewise others forces to Coventry to assist

Many teams are like this
A Chelsea supporting mate was fearful that they would only get 30,000 at Wembley if they moved there during their (now cancelled) rebuild of their stadium
When they went down to the 2nd division (now Championship) in the 1980's they were getting crowds of 8000 some weeks

More recently - take similar size clubs, Southampton and Leicester - both averaged over 20k in league one

We haven’t averaged that since the Ricoh was new

This is nonsense though, not even close to being true because people often grossly overstate how big Coventry is by using the city population (which is often a false figure based on an artificial line drawn on a map) to the metro area/urban area population. For example, people can argue all day that Coventry is bigger than Nottingham, but the truth is that the urban sprawl that is Nottingham is FAR bigger than Coventry because the urban area doesn't stop at the artificial line that denotes the city boundary, which it actually does with Coventry because it isn't part of a bigger urban area. Yes, Coventry has satellite towns, but then so does everywhere else. This is before you look at wider catchment areas and number of teams in the locality.

Leeds? Do you realise how big Leeds is? Leeds is more than twice the size of Coventry, so their gates should be double. Bradford? From the end of the second world war until now, the first time that had a higher average gate than ourselves was 2014. Every year prior to that we'd had higher gates. So their current attendances are very high by based on their history and ours are historically low, but this is a very recent thing.

We would now though if we were in the Prem. All the local international students would increase the gates if we had Man U, Man City, Arsenal etc every other week. Weirdly, they don't bother vs Fleetwood.

Can anyone explain why Sunderland’s crowds plummeted for the play-offs? Lots of empty space for the first leg semi against Portsmouth (41k a few weeks earlier in the league vs them, 26k for the playoffs) and didn’t sell their allocation for the Wembley final.

It is, but like I said, it is unfair to have a pop at the people that go when they can as opposed to those that never go. I go to about 20 games a year, love the club, obviously did all possible to get Wembley tickets, only to be vilified because I didn't go to next home game. Is that fair?

I’m not having a pop at anyone who goes. But if we’re averaging 10k home fans and taking 40k - there’s a significant number of people who don’t go at all

Because you have to buy a ticket for the playoffs, the game a few weeks earlier had all the season ticket holders included in the total.

I mean it's not nonsense really. Coventry have the entire Warwickshire population to fall on, there is no other team in Warwickshire. Nottingham also has two teams to split whatever you consider their population to be. Look at the likes of Leicester and Southampton in League 1. Why are we so far below what they are? Why can we take 45,000 and then have gates of 12,000? Our support relative to size of potential fan base is and has always been shit.

Leicester won the league in their one and only season in L1 which would have had an impact. Why have there been many occasions over the years when we have average more than both of those clubs when playing at the same level? Gates fluctuate for all clubs over time and there are lots of reasons.

And BTW, the 10K we average at home at the moment, it isn't the same 10K every week. People might do the odd game here and there, but they don't all do the same game.

That's because attendances were rising across the board. They've continued to rise for pretty much every team but us. I understand a portion of that is due to us falling down the leagues but we managed to get around that when we moved to the Ricoh. The fans that turn up for us are generally great, particularly away from home but I can't see how anybody could argue the city isn't extremely apathetic about the football club and if more bothered we would probably be in a better position.

Pompey is an Island...add in Havant & Waterlooville, 2/3 Fareham, Gosport, 1/2 of Chichester...they don't exactly have a tiny catchment area. I would agree they have less fickle fans though

Coventry has the entire population of Warwickshire to fall on. Does it really though? Even if you believe that people in Shipston-on-Stour and those living on the Gloucestershire border somehow identify with Coventry, the same can be said of the other places too. The population of Leicestershire is about 1.1 million. Coventry and Warwickshire (even if you include those areas nears the Cotswolds and south of Birmingham), is still home to 250K fewer people than in Leicestershire.

You can take these snapshots at given times and scratch your head as to why, but these things change over time. Pompey averaged 8,500 in the Championship in 1997. Why?
