I’d be happy with a versatile wide player and centre midfielder if they were both quality additions. A young version of Grimes please Doug.

I gave up a while ago because I’m convinced he’s got investment somewhere but last I checked we’re about break even on transfer spend since Doug came in. Maybe a couple of mil either way.

We’re clearly lacking quality backup all across midfield and on the wings. You can probably fill it all with two players if they’re the right profile but it still leaves us short from an ideal situation where we’d be subbing off 3-4 players a game to manage their fitness. The difference between the top three or four and the rest is that ability IMO. And yeah, it’s not cheap which is why it’s mostly parachute clubs that do it.

With the greatest respect to Lampard how many Championship clubs genuinely have that kind of luxury...?

It's exceptionally rare that if a key player is sold another is waiting in the wings ready and able to automatically step into their shoes.

He's only really correct in theory.

I wouldn't disrupt it either but it's massive in the sense that it'll likely make the difference or not to going up if we're in contention for the top 2.

I see his comments as an ambition more than a complaint to be fair to him. If we don’t go up this season, there will be a good amount of squad turnover and a fast start will be pretty unlikely.

Would it though?

Luton when they went up only brought a couple of players, Sunderland brought in a couple last January as well.

I think if we utilise it correctly in terms of bringing in quality where it's needed then sure it's an important window but I'd only really qualify it as massive if we desperately need incomings e.g. in the event key players are out long term.

We 100% need a wide player, a first team ready wide player at that.

Then yes ideally a midfielder / 10 - if they could play both great. If not perhaps 2, one being a loan in 10 role perhaps.

We will 100% go into market in Jan. We will be going for “grimes” ready players in Jan - no point otherwise.

Nah Simms was the only one I know of who had a large part of his reported fee as promotion add ones. Others will have small ones I'm sure but it will be insignificant compared to that Prem wedge.

It's massive in the sense that it could well make the difference in going up or not, not how many players we'll bring in.

It didn't really make much of a difference to Sunderland's and Luton's promotion charge if you look at who they brought in.

Possibly you could argue Sunderland more than Luton with Le Fee but he was incredibly average for the most part.

I think it's a case of using the window to compliment what we already have. At this stage I wouldn't really look at making any major changes apart from improving depth.

I think those clauses are likely to be out of time now anyway, they weren't reported to be open ended. Two years maybe. Haji had one too for sure and there are probably/possibly others, the details of the deals weren't all disclosed but I suspect we at least tried to do it with all of the players that we've brought in.

Was thinking of someone a little further ahead in their development than Kai if possible . Also, not convinced his style is all that similar to Grimes.

As someone else mentioned, the other Rak Sakyi at Chelsea who we were rightly / wrongly rumoured with (did anyone confirm which Rak Sakyi it was?!) looked extremely similar in style to Grimes; albeit he’d basically played little to no first team football. I’m sure the recruitment team have many names. I hope.

Rudoni doesn’t need one because he’s young and he’ll be in the Premier League with us next season anyway 🙂

One to keep an eye on for January may be Romain Esse. Had a fall-out with Oliver Glasner and not making squads now. Also seems that he played across AMRLC (in Football Manager speak) at Millwall. Loan move if we’re still well in the running?

Sunderland has a parachute clubs wage bill last season IIRC. They didn’t need to add in Jan they already had the squad.

Right, I’ve been extraordinarily sad for the last half hour and have run through those figures. Average Championship wage bill (all staff; unfortunately there’s no player-only breakdown) in 23/24 was £36m. Stripping out the 3 that had immediately come down from the PL, the average dropped to £28m, equating to an average 95.6% of turnover spent on wages/staff costs.

By comparison we had a wage bill of £23.4m and were just shy of 80% turnover ratio.
