I think any rational fan expected us to sell at least 1 big hitter this summer to fund more signings but loosing Rudi to another champ club would be a reality check to where we sit in the food chain for some fans. It may come down to how confident the club feel they will get a decent price for MVE in the next few weeks, but what’s concerning is if saints sell Dibbling & Fernandes for a combined 80mill it’s perfectly logical they go big on Rudi, especially after Still’s comments about wanting championship experience.

Given that Southampton think they can request stupid fees for Championship players, I don’t know why people seem happy to let him go for £15-20 million. There’s improvements needed all over the defence, on the wings, more dynamism needed in the middle and upgrades on BTA and Bassette required all on top of you then having to replace Rudoni.
£20 million doesn’t cut it. Bare minimum £30 million, add an extra £5-10 million club in the same league tax on top.

The ONLY way selling your best player to a promotion rival 3 weeks before the window makes ANY sense is if they're offering £30m.

In terms of the player, both clubs are offering Championship football this season. We can guarantee top flight football to him next season either here or elsewhere, they could offer the same.

He’s a good player - but let’s be really honest about him - he was poor to average during the first chunk of last season. Played well when the whole team did during the run - and then didn’t do much in both play-off games (aside from his header in the first).
The PO games kind of summed him up to me - during actual open play, doesn’t do much to impact the game but he’s alright to pop up with a header or late run into the box. For a 10, he doesn’t work well enough between the lines or link the play between our CMs and the strikers anywhere near well enough. From open play he doesn’t create a lot and he’s not amazing at picking the ball up and driving with it.
It’s a key reason why a lot of us have been calling out for a different style of number 10 (someone like O’Hare) to come in rather than a new striker.

It shows how different we are being ran if selling your best player 3 weeks before the end of the window is now suddenly the worst thing in the world.
We used to leave it until deadline day and not replace them. 3 weeks is plenty of time to find a replacement which is why the 'next couple days crucial' is key to the report. It's the model to sell and build we can still be successful this year without Rudoni.

There are a lot of if's, but's and maybe's in all of this, but if Rudoni is to be sold we should be holding firm on £25m, and tbf to King I don't see us just selling him off on the cheap.
Now we clearly have funds in the pot already, given that we've made bids to buy Rushworth and Hughes, so let's assume he's sold and we have £30m+ burning a hole in our pockets, we could do some serious damage with that. However, at this late stage in the window, that's only going to kind of work if we're already working to spend the money and we're in negotiations for 4-5 players. So for example we could get one of Hughes/Doyle, i'd go all out for Billing from Bournemouth, and a quality striker.
But it's a big ask to get so many deals over the line in a short space of time, and losing Rudoni without a replacement leaves a huge gaping hole in the team. It's going to be the biggest test of the transfer model so far under King's leadership, and could make or break our season.

I still need convincing that Charlie Hughes is a much better option.
Granted he is younger and gets stuck in, but Kitching is better with the ball at his feet and still has plenty of time to improve himself.

I get both sides of this debate. We sell and it’s the model and reinvest in better players and a better squad or we don’t sell and we keep our best player at any cost to a rival especially.
personally I am on the second side. This late on with only 2 weeks just over left to replace rudoni and get someone else just seems a kick in the face. Sell him early on and have a clear plan then I think that’s fine as it allows you time and better players and that is indeed the model. Selling now means we will just pay over the odds for anyone we want and they will need time to adjust to us which takes time.

Hamer wasn’t replaced, we spunked a load of money on Kitching instead while signing a child on loan from Brighton. He still hasn’t really been replaced even now.
Hamer was at least getting a season in the top flight to be clear.

The thing that boggles my brain is that fans think it’s ok for Hull to sell Hughes to us but not ok for City to sell to other championship clubs.
