Did we go out of the playoffs due to our defense, genuine question by the way I always had it in my mind we didn't take our chances meaning we had to push forward which left us exposed at the back. One in, one out for strikers imo. We lacking forward players that play out wide or AM.
This Belgian striker, for example, plays LW/RW/ST which strikes me as a great role player because of his versatility.
I love cup runs and top six finishes too, but the goal is promotion.This is mental. We didnt get promoted because of Liam Kitchinggot to an FA cup semi final and play offs but ok

If we’re digging out any defender specifically, you’d have to point the finger at MVE who player a part in both goals we conceded at home. Their second goal was unforgivable.

What happens if you replace Collins stats with Dovin. I can think of the top of my head 8 goals that Collins conceded I would expect Dovin to keep out. There must be more too. With a solid keeper and LB I actually think we'll be fine, we do need to upgrade Binks and Lats, if that pushes Thomas and Kitching to the bench then so be it.

Interesting to see Dovin already in the gym. Being a goalkeeper maybe the recovery time is much less. The fact he is 22 and so young will help also. If he is going gym work now I can’t actually see him that far away.

Not scientific in the slightest, but if we had a literally bang average keeper (conceded the exact number of xGOT that the opposition generated) we’d have been 9 points better off. Still would have meant a playoff semi final vs Sunderland, albeit we’d have played the 2nd leg at home.
Edit: I should state this is only relating to games Collins played in. But Portsmouth as an example, we’d have still lost 3-1 according to the stats (noting one of their goals came from a balls up and finish from a yard).

Regardless, a minute from penalties you should be able to shut up shop, like we should against Luton a few weeks before. We were vulnerable all season we never looked solid even against the worst teams. That only changed when we either had a keeper having worldies or changed our set up to stuff the defence and not require them to pass out from the back. We have had to sacrifice a midfielder to allow us to play with wingers because the back two can’t play out and can’t be trusted alone.

Seem to remember most of last season..(first half especially)keeper having no shots to save. Just picking ball up from back of net and wondering where the fuck did that goal come from.

I do tend to agree with the wider point that we concede too many chances. Slow work day so I’ve just gone through this season and it seems we conceded 81 ‘big chances’ across the 46-game season. To put it into context, Leeds (who I know are a far stronger team but also tend to play fairly open football) conceded 46 ‘big chances’. Setting aside whether our keeper should be competent enough to keep more of those out, it’s far too high.

If you are attacking and creating chances but not taking them then the pressure on the defence is going to be doubled. We didn’t score enough for the amount of chances we had last year.
I rate Wright, Simms and Bassette but none took their chance to shine last season. Wright didn’t fully recover from injury in my opinion and looked rusty. Simms lost confidence and I think is very much a confidence player and Bassette is very raw but has a lot of potential.
BTA got 11 goals for WBA the season before but isn’t ever going to get more than that and is really a winger.
I think Thomas is quality and will get better and Kitching is solid but another strong quick forward and another strong CB would make a world of difference plus experience and know how at LB.

Id argue Rudoni plays a central role often in terms of being on the end of crosses. Wright is our main striker, we can probably upgrade behind him over Simms or BTA, EMC and Saka could chip in with more IMO.

I'm not sure we know yet if he was playing Wright as CF because he really wants to or because he just didn't rate the other options. I guess we'll find out soon. His versatility is a good thing either way.

EMC had a very stop start season last season but we saw glimpses of what he's capable of.
With a full pre-season under his belt under the current coaching set up I wouldn't be shocked if he hits double figures in goals and assists respectively next season.

I'm sure its Lampards idea, someone of that stature wouldn't get cucked by a Championship striker. It's just whether it was his idea because he likes Wright there, or whether it was his idea because Simms and BTA don't really do anything for him, which you couldn't blame him for.
Lets face it Wright is better off the left, we know that, but he should be able to do a good job up front, pretty sure he played his whole career there before we moved him.
