Similarly Dovin having a purple patch doesn’t change the fact we went out of the playoffs because of our defence, and nearly lost the playoffs because of them too. We had a semi decent record when we completely changed our style to five at the back and longer balls out, but that’s not sustainable. Same as how Wilson and RCC are technically our best keepers in terms of clean sheets but we all know it’s because we changed the entire team set up.

As someone else said our CBs really hamper how we want to play and ultimately will be the difference between us going up or not. We may have underperformed out xG but it was the third highest in the division and our xGA was the seventh lowest. Only Bristol had worse in the top six.
Did we go out of the playoffs due to our defense, genuine question by the way I always had it in my mind we didn't take our chances meaning we had to push forward which left us exposed at the back. If we generated more for our possession we could have sat back more inviting them in to us rather than the other way round.

We conceded in the final minute because our CB lost his man at a set piece so I’m going to say yes

I agree, but I still don’t think Kitching plays at the consistently high level that you’d need or expect for a promotion-calibre team. Which is probably why we haven’t got promoted while he’s playing in it.
This is mental. We didnt get promoted because of Liam Kitching🤣 got to an FA cup semi final and play offs but ok

We had the second best attack outside the top two last year. Spending all summer discussing strikers is more nuts TBH

One in, one out for strikers imo. We lacking forward players that play out wide or AM.

This Belgian striker, for example, plays LW/RW/ST which strikes me as a great role player because of his versatility.

What happens if you replace Collins stats with Dovin. I can think of the top of my head 8 goals that Collins conceded I would expect Dovin to keep out. There must be more too. With a solid keeper and LB I actually think we'll be fine, we do need to upgrade Binks and Lats, if that pushes Thomas and Kitching to the bench then so be it.

Collins mistakes of the top of my head.

3 v Portsmouth
1 v Luton
2 v Burnley
2 v Plymouth.

Also I wonder if Isidor will be available at Sunderland, the players they're chasing leave most of their squad surplus to requirements.

Well yeah. This is my point too. If we even just get one more signing then please be a keeper. Be worth 10 points alone.

Interesting to see Dovin already in the gym. Being a goalkeeper maybe the recovery time is much less. The fact he is 22 and so young will help also. If he is going gym work now I can’t actually see him that far away.

The fact we need a solid keeper is a sign the defence isn’t doing its job. A busy keeper isn’t a good thing.

You might see me in the pub with a beer, but doesn't mean I'm ready to knock back 8 pints without some serious practice 🤪

Not scientific in the slightest, but if we had a literally bang average keeper (conceded the exact number of xGOT that the opposition generated) we’d have been 9 points better off. Still would have meant a playoff semi final vs Sunderland, albeit we’d have played the 2nd leg at home.

Edit: I should state this is only relating to games Collins played in. But Portsmouth as an example, we’d have still lost 3-1 according to the stats (noting one of their goals came from a balls up and finish from a yard).

We only had to go into extra time because our striker couldn’t hit the target unmarked from 3 yards out.

Regardless, a minute from penalties you should be able to shut up shop, like we should against Luton a few weeks before. We were vulnerable all season we never looked solid even against the worst teams. That only changed when we either had a keeper having worldies or changed our set up to stuff the defence and not require them to pass out from the back. We have had to sacrifice a midfielder to allow us to play with wingers because the back two can’t play out and can’t be trusted alone.

I do tend to agree with the wider point that we concede too many chances. Slow work day so I’ve just gone through this season and it seems we conceded 81 ‘big chances’ across the 46-game season. To put it into context, Leeds (who I know are a far stronger team but also tend to play fairly open football) conceded 46 ‘big chances’. Setting aside whether our keeper should be competent enough to keep more of those out, it’s far too high.

You forgetting MVE playing their striker in to score?

If you are attacking and creating chances but not taking them then the pressure on the defence is going to be doubled. We didn’t score enough for the amount of chances we had last year.
I rate Wright, Simms and Bassette but none took their chance to shine last season. Wright didn’t fully recover from injury in my opinion and looked rusty. Simms lost confidence and I think is very much a confidence player and Bassette is very raw but has a lot of potential.
BTA got 11 goals for WBA the season before but isn’t ever going to get more than that and is really a winger.
I think Thomas is quality and will get better and Kitching is solid but another strong quick forward and another strong CB would make a world of difference plus experience and know how at LB.

A problem for us is we should have scored more goals last season.

We need a top class clinical striker.

Agree with this. A few saying the "attack" was good last season & 2nd best "attack" etc. Well image how good it would be if our central striker/no 9 actually joined in?

We scored 64 goals in the champo last season. Only about 12-15 were scored by players playing that central fowards role. Imagine how potent we'd be with an upgrade in the No 9 or central foward position.

⚽ Total Goals Scored by Coventry City: 66 (Championship only)

🧩 Goals by Position

✅ Non-Central Strikers

These players are primarily midfielders, wingers, or defenders:

  • Jack Rudoni (Midfielder) – 10 goals
  • Victor Torp (Midfielder) – 6 goals
  • Ephron Mason-Clark (Winger) – 6 goals
  • Bobby Thomas (Defender) – 5 goals
  • Tatsuhiro Sakamoto (Winger) – 4 goals
  • Josh Eccles (Midfielder) – 3 goals
  • Milan van Ewijk (Full-back) – 2 goals
  • Matt Grimes (Midfielder) – 4 goals
  • Jake Bidwell (Full-back) – 1 goal
  • Jamie Paterson (Midfielder) – 1 goal
Subtotal (Non-Strikers): 42 goals

Players in cross over positions:

  • Haji Wright – 12 goals
  • Brandon Thomas-Asante – 4 goals

❌ Central Strikers

  • Ellis Simms – 6 goals
  • Norman Bassette – 2 goals
Subtotal (Strikers): 8 goals

Aren't 2 of Grimes's goals from playing for Swansea?

Id argue Rudoni plays a central role often in terms of being on the end of crosses. Wright is our main striker, we can probably upgrade behind him over Simms or BTA, EMC and Saka could chip in with more IMO.

Kitching + Thomas is a top 6 partnership and should only be broken up if the right player comes up that takes us up another level and we’ve upgraded other areas that need further attention first.
Its more the backups for them I’d say that need upgrading (Lati and Binks) I think Lati is a good option around the squad and a good influence and leader but maybe we can sell him and Binks and sign 2 CBs that can seriously compete with Kitching and Thomas one experienced and one youngster, for me I’d like Liam Lindsay or Rob Holding for a backup to Bobby. Then as a backup to Kitch I’d like one of Marton Dardai or Fedde Leysen

I'm not sure we know yet if he was playing Wright as CF because he really wants to or because he just didn't rate the other options. I guess we'll find out soon. His versatility is a good thing either way.

Rumour was Wright was asking for it wasn’t it? I’d hope he does want it because at times Wright was out centrally when he really shouldn’t have been or should have been moved/withdrawn. If that wasn’t Lampards idea it’s not the greatest sign. Can’t get cucked by Haji Wright.

EMC had a very stop start season last season but we saw glimpses of what he's capable of.

With a full pre-season under his belt under the current coaching set up I wouldn't be shocked if he hits double figures in goals and assists respectively next season.

Still got plenty to do and im sure some things are very close to being done. Be nice to get 1 more in by the end of the week and get Brau in the pictures.

As for outgoings don't want to any of them until we get a few more in and settled.

I'm sure its Lampards idea, someone of that stature wouldn't get cucked by a Championship striker. It's just whether it was his idea because he likes Wright there, or whether it was his idea because Simms and BTA don't really do anything for him, which you couldn't blame him for.
Lets face it Wright is better off the left, we know that, but he should be able to do a good job up front, pretty sure he played his whole career there before we moved him.

Based on his time here yes , I honestly thought he was sensational for us. Based on last season at Norwich , and I know it's the forum throwaway regarding attitude but , has he honestly progressed or improved to the level he looked like he should have been playing at ?
Personal view is he's viewed through sky blue tinted eyes on his form since he left us

Agreed, he's had two more seasons in the Championship and yet still has no PL interest it appears.
