Oh let’s be fair Kitching has so far under performed for the fee we paid. He certainly improved under Frank but over 2 seasons he’s been disappointing.

That said it should have no impact on our assessment of any future player from Barnsley.

1. Lampard obviously rates him
2. Lampard or any other manager does not give a fuck about any perceived performance vs fee, it's a completely subjective construct invented by people who are trying to argue against the reality that Kitching is a good centre half and, as proven by results with him in the team for many games, has been part of a relatively successful team

The end of the season showed JDS is capable of playing at a good level.

CB is just a more important position than fullback imo, get that partnership right and our goalscorers can take it from there.

Both players who imo massively benefit from having a partner up front.

Our form this season and last improved when Kitching played .
He's had the armband many times this last season so Lampard and his staff trust him as a leader
For me the only thing stopping him playing higher is he lacks a yard of pace .
Aside from that he is a physically aggressive defender that leads the back line when he plays

He was better, yet a lot of goals came from down his side.

He is good in possession yes, and his tackling improved. The problem is his positioning and recovery speed, he just doesn't have it.

You can see the team looks imbalanced. If we had another MVE on the left side the defence would be a much more solid unit.

By that logic they also came down Kitchings side. I’m not even sure how true that is tbh. The Dasilva derangement on here got truly ridiculous at points. Blaming your attacking left back for all your defensive woes seems a little unlikely. Our problem all season was we couldn’t defend our box and that’s on the CBs. Kitching lost his man for the goal that knocked us out. Ultimately CBs matter far more for defence than full backs, especially in our system where they’re designed to get high up the pitch and the DM drops in instead.

It looks like the LB position is being prioritised from early window talk so Lampard likely agrees. I expect Dasilva to stick around though, think Bidwell will be moved on.

I literally just think we need to improve our defence. I think you’re all going to be very disappointed if you think all that’s standing between Thomas and Kitching being a colossal pairing is a new attacking left back. Jay Dasilva didn’t give Kitching the turning circle and game reading ability of an oil tanker.

He reads the game well in my opinion. Its not a new attacking left back thats needed, its one with the recovery pace of MVE.

And you’re entitled to that opinion. I think he’s rash and often slow to react to danger, I think Thomas is too but has other qualities that mean if upgrade Kitching first. Also he’s got more room for improvement, but I worry he won’t fulfil his potential playing alongside Kitching.

Fraser Forster on a short term deal Till Dovin's fit?

I know wages could be a stumbling block, but plenty of experience

Haji Wright has scored 12 goals in 29 matches so far in the Championship 2024/2025 season. 8 of the 12 goals were scored at home while he scored 4 goals at away games. Overall, Haji Wright's goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.51. Moreover, Haji Wright's total G/A (goals + assists) is 13 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 0.55 per 90 minutes. His Non-Penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.46. This puts Haji Wright's npxG output at 11.00 which puts him in the top 98 percentile of Championship players.

Not good enough, he needs to be top 99.9 percentile.

Personally think if you're looking at improving the defence in order of importance (GK is part of the defence) the order is..
1. GK - Desperately need a competent GK while Dovin is out, we need to be looking at a season long solution really.
2. LB - Dasilva has improved but still.. Bidwell has declined massively. Think we're looking at sorting this one ASAP.
3. LCB - I like Kitching but if the money is there after we've addressed other positions i think we might look at doing this too.

On all this talk, assume the key roles in defence for us to improve is GK, RB (need a backup at least, and LB.

Think the main CB pairing of Thomas and Kitching is good. Back ups concern me so wouldn’t mind one going for an experienced CB (probably Lati as most likely to be sold).

Spot on.
We don't have enough pace in the back line for the system we're playing.
A left back with the speed of MVE would help in that department, as would a genuinely quick CB.

I will be disappointed if we don’t bring in better than Kitch for the left centre back. Maybe a quick left back will help compensate for Kitchs lack of pace but fundamentally he’s a solid championship defender but no better.
