You only need 1 GK normally. We have as many GK's as strikers yet still brought in another one.

I have a few Southampton supporting friends who think they are in real trouble this season. They think the signings are poor and worried about Still plus finances in the background.
Can’t see them paying the £20m needed, and Rudoni wouldn’t want to leave Lampard (his icon) to play for another champ team.

Have been saying the same. We won't know until about October time because there's a big gap between the Prem and Championship but still have them in the top 6. A manager that never played professional footballer and managed 1 decent side for 1 year. What could go wrong.....

He’s managed over 100 games for French top flight sides.

In all estimates of sale or buy prices I am usually at the lower end. But even I think rudoni is 20 m. The risk is that Southampton are odds on an automatic promotion spot whereas we are a play off at best. However I would have thought rudoni would want middle table Prem

They're not although odds don't always mean a lot.

Bassette is 50/1 to be top scorer in the Championship. Rudoni is 100/1. Rudoni is a great E/W shot.

Reims are a small club considering. They now play in what is League 2. They are not a big club. As you know I live in France. They would be considered an average Championship side at best. Lens finished in 8th last season. Won 15 games.out of 34. They have some good sides but other than the top sides it's very mediocre. The top.'sport' here is hunting. Football comes 2nd. I have a couple of parcels of woodland that came with my house and the chasse have the right to hunt on it. I'm supposed to get a % of any wild boar if caught on my land.

Like I said he managed one big club in France for one season. If we had got him instead of Lampard we would have gone ballistic. Never been a pro footballer. One season at a decent French side.

What you were replying to wasn’t big clubs, they said he’s managed 100 games in the top flight. Reims were in the top flight when he managed them. They may have even finished 8th too.

Edit - it was 11th

This is what I said.

Reims then got relegated from top flight. They are not a good side. Most clubs in the French top flight are not good sides. That's why the Championship is considered to be about the 5th of 6th best division in Europe.

IMHO Lens wouldn't be the best side in the Championship. They would be hoping for the playoffs. If you disagree I will respect your idea of French football. But look at their signings. Sky Sports have distorted football in the favour of the Prem and the clubs in the Championship risking everything to get there.

Fair enough, but that’s an opinion. You replied to SeaSeeEffCee after he pointed out Still has managed 100 games in the French top flight. That’s a fact. That’s what I was replying to.

He was replying to me though on saying he had only managed one decent side.

I'm not looking for an argument. Yes he has managed in the top flight in France for over 100 games. I fully agree with this. It doesn't make them a good side here though.

My point as before is he has never been a professional footballer and has only managed one decent side that he took to 8th place in a poor division. That's enough doubt in my mind on why they won't finish top of the Championship. The Championship is a very hard place to get promoted from.

My original point was would you have been happy with Will Still? I was undecided on Lampard and he had experience at this level and higher. He took Derby to the playoffs and how have they done since?

I’m not sure Bassette would score 10 in League 1, never mind 18. Kone’s story in any case is intriguing and suggests he has a high ceiling.

Can’t we use potential instead?

Kone is too like for like. We are a championship side and need upgrades, if any, like this young fella from Hull at CB. Our fowards are stll relatively young, young enough to still use the word potential with them, but there comes a time when they have to step up to the plate.
Norman, is said to have potential, but sorry I have not seen it. He is 20/21 so has a few years of probability/possibility left with him, as many have said he needs a loan, although FL may not trust him enough to go off and play at another club and prefers to keep a watchful eye on him.
Asante, is such a good human being he is a joy and great to have around the place, every video, every team mate loves him, however, he is of an age now where he should be first choice, and that is not off the bench. It's a big season for him because he has to break through. He can score at this level but not consistantly and has to improve. If there is any coach in the league that can have an impact on him it is FL.
Simms, still young still learning, which many forget. He can definitely score goals and could, if he believes it, go onto higher things, like Viktor. He is miles too laid back (I get slightly irritated at the younger generation because their image of laid back is an older generation's lazy) I wouldn't say Simms is lazy but he appear to exude the characteristic of effortless. Again, it's good he is around FL and team because they can still bring out the best in him. We have seen it in a few games over the years when he has a physical presence the damage he causes to CBs. I would really stick with him.
Wright - possibly the best forward in the championship when he is firing and fit, which sadly is not often. He is so nearly there with ability, scoring chances and his use of his physical power. If he is firing from the beginning he could save us a fortune, and he has the ability, if we won promotion of playing in the premier, he is that good, on his day.
We don't have a poacher, we don't have a Godden which we miss. We do need others like EMC and Sakamoto to come in with goals as we do with our midfield other than Rudi. Thomas can get a few but our wider guys including left and right backs also need to chip in, some times when I watch a game I cringe at our wider players performance because they get into position and don't shoot. Many of our team lack that confidence to shoot from range, why? I do not know because i am sure they do it in training.
We are days away now from a season high in anticiation and a common goal of promotion. we supporters believe it, as we attend in our numbers, however, we can't do the work like the players, they need to believe in themselves and the project. It's a big year that will define many people's futures. Good luck to everyone.

Ligue 2 isn't the same as League 2 - it's the French second division. His last season at Reims they finished 9th having lost some of their best players, which is punching well above their weight. When he first took them over they were in relegation battle but they finished 11th. He can't really be blamed for their relegation the season after he left, if anything it shows the decent job he was doing.

That's what I thought, surely overachieving with a small club is a good achievement and not something you can criticise him for

My personal opinion re Still, which I think a number of Southampton fans also share (from what I've seen) is that Still doesn't come from a background where he's won promotions or titles.

His last three seasons in management have shown progression in terms of where Still has managed to get his teams to finish in Ligue 1, but is this enough for a team promotion from the Championship?

Reims 22/23 (11th)
Reims 23/24 (9th)
Lens 24/25 (8th)

He's a bit of an unknown quantity, I guess we will see how well Southampton and Still are fairing come October/November after a solid number of games.

I agree with this. I can see him either taking the league by storm and being the managerial flavour of the day like Mckenna was, or being a complete flop.

When he played against us he was a different gravy and was only like 18 at the time. Wouldn’t have minded us picking him up as a back up winger but that’s only going off watching one game. Palace must have also seen what I seen in his game to buy him but obviously difficult to break through there with them doing so well.

Would have been a Cheap buy for £1m though as a back up

Palace bought two players when Derby was in turmoil. There was that striker we were linked with taking from Palace on loan, how’s he gone since then?
