I think we neee a new striker but people clearly think BTA or Simms will come good.

A new striker would be nice but both players named have been top scorers for their clubs in recent seasons

In recent seasons being the key word.
BTA got 11 which isn’t considerably great anyway. Simms wasn’t even top scorer was he

That applies to any team in the championship though. First choice striker gets injured is always an issue.

Personally think we create and score more with Torp in the side . He takes a lot of pressure off Rudoni , he likes to operate as a proper number 8 and scores goals .
Can we keep him fit though ?

It doesn't matter who you have or who you sign, anyone can get injured. When Coventry signed Bryan King I don't think he had missed a game through injury in about 5 seasons. Not long after joining Coventry he dislocated his knee and his career was as good as over

Even to stay where we are we need to refresh the squad a bit. Assuming MVE leaves, you also want to shift a few (Binks, Bidwell, Collins, Allen and a striker sound the most likely from the ITK chat).

Before Sep you'd ideally have a GK, cover at RB and an upgrade at CB, CM and up top if we can shift what's there now. If Raphael isn't trusted for real mins then we need competition for Sakamoto, too.

Eccles, Torp, Sheaf, Grimes, Rudoni plus an 8-10 hybrid feels like enough. Need more from Torp, though. Think we'll see movement later in the window this time with the need to shift players first.

Still think Stoke will come in for at least one of our players, most likely Allen as Robins has always been a huge fan

I don’t think discounting goals against Maidenhead is splitting hairs really

But they count as in goals scored over a season which is the usual indicator for a top goal scorer accolade

Getting Torp through a full pre season could be the key. When he first arrived he was below the fitness levels for the Championship. Last year being injured during pre season meant he was still struggling and was playing catch up. Towards the end of the season he looked there or there abouts.

I hope he really kicks on this season (like I was hoping he would last season). If he does he could be like a new signing, with the potential upgrade in quality he could deliver.

Think a midfield 3 of Grimes , Rudoni and Torp takes a lot of beating

The only concern I've got about the squad is the goalkeeper while Dovin is injured, quite happy otherwise even if MVE goes.

Maybe you should have clarified. I don’t really care about the cup. If they aren’t doing it in the league is the main thing to consider

I did say top goal scorer which we've already established is over the course of a whole season and not set by the parameters of some bloke on a keyboard looking to score points

Is he too similar to Grimes , is he mobile enough to play as an 8 ?

I've got high hopes for Torp, this is the first time he's had a proper pre-season with us (last year was a balls up with Vivesh moving on and the ridiculous ipad loonies coming in.) Under the guidance of Lampard i think he'll make a significant improvement.

He isn’t an 8 nor is he remotely similar to Grimes? Why would we play an 8 in a 4-2-3-1?

Most of us are only bothered by the league. Ask anyone who was top scorer that season they’d say Wright.

He's at least as mobile as Torp, but doesn't have the shooting capability

I’d say if you asked the majority of the forum I’d they rather go out in the first round of the cup every year for the next 10 years if it meant getting promoted this season they’d say yes

Or goalscoring capability , what is his best return for goals without checking ?
And this isn't an anti Sheaf post , genuine question

That's the sort of competition we need though. In key positions you need players who are very comparable in quality, rather than a distinct first and lesser second choice. Elite athletes relish competition and being pushed, rather than having an easy ride.

But that still doesn't get over the fact that Simms scored as many goals as Wright over the course of that season which is why they were joint top scorers whether you or most of us like it that is the parameters set .
Jeez it's like arguing with my 3 year old granddaughter

No I’m suggesting that there’s less weight in goals against Maidenhead than against someone in a playoff.

you are clearly a happy clapping fan

Would quite like to move on Allen, or even Eccles if the bid was right to allow us to try for something a bit different in midfield, but I'd say it's the area of least concern for me. If it stays as is, with everyone fit, its ok.
