The Prem has changed so much we'd see spending we've never seen in our Iives so the summer would at least be very exciting even if the final outcome was getting panned most weeks and finishing third from bottom.

Sunderland and Forest recently are giving me unrealistic hope tbh. Keep the recruitment strategy going around decent people with potential just spend a lot more on it is what I’m hoping for. That plus Lampard with a point to prove I’m hoping for a solid 15th.

I agree, i'm actually enjoying Sunderland doing well which i didn't think i'd ever say. Also agree that the strategy should stay the same but obviously at a higher level.

Don't get me wrong i'm not tuning into their games and leaping out of me seat, it's just the hope isn't it, the last 3 or 4 seasons it had just looked absolutely hopeless for teams coming up out of the Championship. Maybe they've just all been shite and had shite recruitment.

Both are unrealistic models for us to follow (£165m spent by Sunderland?). We’re going do have to bring in a a lot of players with potential to supplement our existing squad and hope it clicks well enough to get 4th from bottom.

It costs about £150m to stay up yeah. I suspect there will be investment at least if not a sale if we go up tho.

That’s probable, but I’m not sure I’m that comfortable with moving away from the model that’s been successful so far.

I think in the PL to stay there there will be quite a lot of fan discomfort tbh. Just reading about ST prices for example.

Ballard is doing alright in the Prem, you’d be surprised at how many players could make the jump up. We’ll be changing the tactical setup and that may suit certain players.

For all the praise Grimes gets, he’s a player who could potentially struggle a lot in the Prem. It’s been obvious for several seasons that he is too good for championship.

The model for Prem survival is v much spend £100m minimum and hope for the best like Sunderland and Forest have.

FFP having unintended consequences. As many financial analysts point out, teams don’t need to sell match day tickets at all to break even… so why are prices so high and raising?

1) the away price cap
2) the balance sheet for FFP

Well intentioned, but FFP is not fit for purpose.

Honestly I’d happily just wage cap each division by the TV money. Included European in that. The other money made can go on fees and the rest. But the fundamental idea a club should pay more in wages than the market has shown that level of football can bear is nonsense so something has to be done.

Forest isn't really a case study at all.

Their drug baron owner has just chucked hundreds of millions at the squad until it's somewhat stuck. In their first season in the PL his son was picking a lot of the transfers.

And when you thought they were becoming more than established in the PL, it's very much becoming unstuck because he's a lunatic and doesn't have the temperament to run a club properly.

I’m the opposite, let things be the Wild West again. If Newcastle want to spend £1bn in a single window, let them crack on. All it’s done is consolidate the Top 4-6 teams and Man City have got there and essentially pulled the ladder up.

Salary caps would most likely see clubs give out huge bonuses to make up for lost earnings. Unlike US sports, there’s no incentive for clubs to take on bad salaries and so on.

They were a promotion too far I reckon. You need a proper setup off the pitch too. I feel in terms of facilities and coaching, bar the training ground really, we’re much closer to a pl team.

Ipswich went with the failed strategy of buying what they saw as the best players from The Championship. It's not a recruitment strategy i'd go near, i'd say 2 maximum. This is a thread i have planned for the end of the season if we go up btw. 'Which 2 players would you take up with us?'

My worry there is there’s always someone willing to gamble with a clubs future and it trickles down to stupid money being spent where no one can actually afford it.

The problem clubs have going up I find is that it's incredibly difficult to actually build a successful squad in one single window.

In terms of getting players in that are capable of playing that level I genuinely don't believe it's actually as difficult as people think, as long as you've got a solid recruitment team behind you that is, and you're willing to spend.

The real challenge is finding players that can immediately hit the ground running. For instance, clubs going up from the Championship will look towards the international market, but the issue they have is they just don't have the luxury of getting a settling in period. It's such a relentless league that it's sink or swim.

Or they do an Ipswich and just cherry pick the best Championship players and hope it works despite the fact that dozens of clubs have fallen into that same trap over the years.

I’ve always thought it would be a negative part of being promoted to the prem that we would have to get rid of most of the team that got you there. I think Ipswich fans are going through it at the moment, I suppose you would soon get over it if you’re winning games.

Tough question that, particularly as such players would likely come up with another promoted side.

We have more players with that little bit of sparkle that could stick around imo. I certainly think our entire best 11 as is will make the matchday squad even if only 4 of them end up starting. We should concentre our funds on 6/7 real quality players and trust the rest, rather than spreading too thin. Imo anyway.

I'd have a rule to exclude those of course. I'm not that fussed by many tbh even from clubs that may follow us up. Could probably crack out a shortlist of about 10 and work from there.

Always hear a lot about Hayden Hackney at Boro for example but he’s never stood out against us.

If we go up we need to learn from the mistakes of Ipswich and Luton and not sign a collection of the best Championship players. Foreign market will always have more value if you have good player ID.

He's highly rated for sure and Frank made sure to have a good chat with him at the end of the Boro game i seem to recall. Heard he did it with Louza too, clever i think.

True when consider how small the squad is. Bidwell, Simms, Lati, Allen, Brau would likely be gone. Would leave us with about 15 players.

That’s a valid concern it’s fair to say most, if not all Prem-Champ clubs are too big to fail. The clubs most likely to fail are teams in L1 and below where FFP is largely out of scope.

FFP won’t stop clubs going bust, at best it’s a road bump. What has done is ring fence the financial superiority of Europe’s elite clubs who are global brands. Man U can outspend Newcastle which is ridiculous because Newcastle have more money, have more recent success in the league but can’t lean on global revenue streams.

It’s not even protecting the teams it intends to and for that reason, it feels redundant. Wage cap systems work in the US where it’s a closed market.

One to keep an eye on, and I had mentioned him previously, is Mamadou Sangare. Moved from Rapid Vienna to Lens in the summer for something like €6m and seems to be a ball winning machine. Gut feel is he’ll get a Prem move next summer for about £15m.
