Severance

www.owlstalk.co.uk

Interesting article/discussion about severance play for players on Sheff Wed forum - which I confess I never knew about.

Ties in with cashflow issues for clubs, and why some clubs may be holding off signing players for as long as possible, to avoid wage costs. For example if we were to sign 6 players averaging £6k a week, then 'delaying' for a month saves the club circa £150k, albeit risks losing a player/ giving them less time for the manager to work with. Where budgets are really tight, some clubs must be adopting this approach. I notice Portsmouth seem to be selling almost every other player in their squad, but have barely recruited!

I didn’t know that about severance pay.
As you say makes ties in with why clubs maybe delaying.

Its clear the decks time at Pompey. I understand they’ve offered a few players contracts reduced wages but most have turned them down, including Watmough who is decent, albeit had some serious injuries…think he’s joined Wigan.
they’re lumbered with John Marquis who has been poor since rejoining. there’s been some talk of Curtis leaving.
I think financially they should be fine. Their owner is rich enough, just prudent. They’ve been heavily linked with Jayden Stockley, which might hint that they’re doing ok.

I would take Curtis is a good player other than the fact he looked a bit of a nonce last time with short baselayer legs and shorts the size of Grealish’s shinpads

I’m not sure what most of that means but agree, Curtis would be a decent signing.

He would be a good signing, he is still contracted to Portsmouth until 2023, they probably wouldn’t sell him for less than £2M.

That either suggests Charlton have other forwards better than him or Aneke is not very fit and can't last 60+ minutes. At least he knows where the goal is.

I'll annoy some on here, but I still wouldn't mind Luke Thomas back, as I think there is the closest to a Calllum O'Hare in terms of energy on the pitch I have seen in the last few years. Wouldn't cost much, and I think there is more to come from him ( not sure where he his at the moment- on loan at Ipswich last season?)

There were some issues with a girlfriend while he was with us iirc, so I don't know if he is a poor man's Peter Ndlovu, but on the pitch I always thought he looked a constant menace for us - quick and a ratter, although he had O'Hare type finishing. The idea of him and O'Hare on the pitch together would be a nightmare for opponents imo. Probably won't happen, but it's something that might prove effective (and relatively cheap) MR will know what he's like, so I'll leave it with him !!

He had to take a break from football for a while as he was struggling mentally and physically

Never mind the opponents, I’m not sure my nerves could handle O’Hare and Thomas missing sitters all game. Could only get worse if they had Biamou up front with them.

I believe the lad has some really serious personal issues. The club did their best to help him during his time here
Although he did reasonably well with us I'd be surprised if we had him back
Hopefully he can sort himself out in the long term though

That's a shame as he is a talented player. However, too similar to O'Hare for us and not as good.

He is a terrible player, no interest whatsoever and his ability would not get him many MOM’s in non league. Sorry, no!!!!!
why do we also keep talking about ex players? Move on..plenty of talent out there.

An exaggeration. I wouldn’t want him back but he’s good enough to have a career in League 1

In our first season back in L1 he was our mom on a number of occasions. I mentioned him purely on the basis of our likely limited budget and what I'd seen of him. His work rate was phenomenal, but his finishing was poor. As for suggesting not being anything special at non league level........have a word with yourself. I do, however, understand why you/others wouldn't want him.

If the best we can afford is George Thomas, we might as well give up now. We know there's plenty of money available for players.

You have your Thomas’ mix up, George Thomas is at QPR, the player being spoken about is Luke Thomas who we had on loan from Derby.

I really liked Luke Thomas, caused problems. Unfortunately finishing was woeful, could have had 10-15 goals that season

Ah, my mistake, I'd take Luke Thomas as an option tbf. Get him in behind cutting balls back to Walker & Godden.

Certainly wouldn't want George Thomas back. I am mystified as to what made Leicester think he might be any use to them

To be fair, if you could put George Thomas' brain in Luke Thomas' head, you'd have a player.

I liked Thomas too. I was surprised he didn't make more of an impact at Barnsley. I thought he was great for us and a cut above League One. With the right club and in the right circumstances, that might still be the case.

Ridiculous post, was a good player and ran his heart out, if he could develop a final product he’d be a championship player.

He was okay during his time here but for his final ball which over the year didn’t seem to improve, went to Barnsley and didn’t really kick on not for us now, I want new blood here who can go straight into the first team and make us better.
