Styles make matches and we aren't good enough to play this expansively against a team stacked with an embarrassing amount of quality. Lampard is keen to live and die by the sword and losing games like that is kind of inevitable.

In defence of Lampard, luck didn’t go our way in either match. I thought we edged the 1st half before the goal away from home, and the 2nd was us playing catch up and being punished. At home, their first goal took a fortunate deflection and we had a stonewall penalty turned down

That said, taking the specific events out of it, the better team won both games.

Using Millwall as an example, they could’ve grabbed a goal or two back at 2-0 and 4-0 flattered to deceive and tonight, there were moments where it looked shaky before we scored the winner. Overall, we deserved 6 points from the 2 fixtures.

2nd place is potentially 82pts

8 more wins from 18 for us
Ipswich need 10 from 19
Boro need 11 wins from 19

Boro need to play Ipswich and ourselves away from home. They could be near perfect for the rest of the season but if they lose both those games, I don’t think there’s way they finish in the Top 2.

Personally think we should still look to be getting 90 points to be sure of the top two. By my reckoning we could do this as follows:

Home - 6W 2D 1L = 20 pts
Away - 3W 3D 3L = 12 pts

Predicting Ipswich to go up is such a normie shout, heck I've done it, they were my pre season favourites also. Let's see where they are after those 5 away games though. They clobbered us but that isn't their usual standard away from home this season.

If we continue our form from the last 10 games (which I think we all agree will improve, and was largely due to illness and injuries and tough fixtures) we will end up with a further 30 points from the last 20 games which has us on 88 points.

1.5ppg required to get to 85points. Another 9 wins. You'd like to think we could pick up at least 2 of those 9 in our next 3? Norwich (A), QPR (A), Oxford (H).
It would be phenomenal to pick up 9 points before facing Boro.

At this rate, @suffolkblue probably wants to play us every week. Head to head, they’ve got the beating of us but think we’ve got this over the rest of the season.

I don’t back Boro to out point either ourselves nor Ipswich.

I don’t frequent your board regularly, just in case I think I’m obsessed or a stalker! I got an email saying I’d been tagged in a message so logged in to have a look.

I’m glad we’ve played you twice and got 6 points. I’m equally pleased we haven’t got to play you again this season . It’s clear that there are 3 teams in this league who are a fair bit better than the rest. I felt we deserved our win at the end of last month against you but that the 3-0 at PR wasn’t a reflection of the game. Another late winner for you last night - the only disappointment on an otherwise good night for us. Actually thats not true, Norwich winning 5-0 away was a bit irritating.

You’re doing what we did 2 years ago - edging close games by the odd goal and getting late winners. We’re looking very comfortable in games at the moment, squad depth is playing a big part and if we can get through this run of away games in February without losing much ground (say within 3 points of second) I fancy us to go up automatically. We look a much better team than we did in the first few months.

I hope this doesn’t come across as arrogance, it’s not meant in that way. I just don’t think the league as a whole is very strong. Leicester, Southampton and Sheffield U have given themselves too much to do. It’s there for the taking for both of us.

Ipswich should be 8 points clear at top with that squad!
I think the league is tougher than last year even without Leeds. I think there are a lot of teams down to Sheff Utd (except Saints and Lesta) who have invested a lot of cash in teams and managers. I think the quality goes up each season. It's a brutal league.

The 3 promoted clubs are the strongest the league has seen in ages, the 3 relegated clubs likewise the weakest. It has basically made the division far more competitive at both ends than it usually would be.

Granted, Ipswich have assembled a ridiculously overpowered squad with parachute money, but took a fair while to get going. You have managed to have 3 league games in a row at home since that game at the CBS, so we'll see how that away form holds up.

You’ve been the clear favourites for the title from day one tbh. The base assumption from me still is we’re finishing second.

During the run in - Ipswich playing Norwich at Carrow Road and then Middlesbrough at home, when we are playing Sheffield Weds at home, without sounding arrogant surely 3pts? and Blackburn away, a happy hunting ground for us looks very appealing

6 points, with Ipswich potentially dropping points in the Derby and then one or both of them and Boro dropping points could be worth their weight in gold

The start of the season was disappointing but looking back now we’ve started to click it’s clear that there were a lot of new players who were settling in and getting used to how we play. Based on the season to date I’d say we’re in the right place. You’ve been better than us over the first 28 games. Where do you think Southampton and Leicester should be with their squads? I don’t think the league is as strong as it was 2 years ago but it’s subjective. Leeds, Leicester and Southampton in 23/24 were all very good with large, strong squads.

On the balance of things, I back us to still win the league but finishing 2nd is also fine. At the start of the season, top 2 was aspirational but leading the way as long as we have, winning the division is an expectation now.

Ipswich have looked strong all season, you top the xG table and at home you’ve only lost once. It’s your away form that has let you down so hoping in Feb you drop points as we did when our calendar was weighted towards tough away games Nov-Jan.

I’m pretty optimistic about our run in, most of our away games are against middling teams, with the exception of Hull and Watford as two our final 3 away games. At home, we’re the strongest in the division and thankfully our most difficult games are at home. Since Lampard has joined, we’ve only lost to promoted teams in the league/playoffs so that’s potentially a good omen for yourselves.

I can’t see Boro overturning a 6-9 point gap over us, particularly if we beat them on the 16th. Ipswich, it depends on your away form picking up so we’ll wait and see. In any case, it’s fair to say both teams overturning the deficit is unlikely at this stage.

3 very winnable fixtures and that would make 5 wins on the bounce. You then beat Boro and suddenly strikers are back in form, you're on another big winning streak... A lad can dream.

I’ve taken a slightly different view. Match our results from the reverse fixtures and we would achieve 41 more points.

That leaves us with leeway to lose 3/4 games we won in the reverse fixture and still make 87 points. Of course we do have the opportunity to improve on results e.g. Norwich, Wrexham, Preston, Hull.

Chatting before last nights game on how this week could have gone and changed the whole outlook, lose last night and Boro win tonight and Saturday against Preston and we are going into the Norwich game level, they lose both games and we go into Mondays game where we could get it back to 12 points with a win. Madness but shows how each game is vital as well as the aim of 8-10+ wins.
We may need more, may need less but we are more than capable of beating most teams in this league with the squad free of injury and the extra players now added

Whilst I agree on paper there's 3 very winnable games ahead of us, ive also had far too many dull and downbeat drives home from Norwich after yet another loss at Carrow Road! Its just another ground we're historically shit at! QPR will also have that 7-1 thumping in the back of their minds and any sort of revenge in the form of a scalp of the league leaders will be highly on the cards. Oxford have taken points from a lot of better teams than them at home so thankfully this ones at the CBS.

Looked at the table split by home and away games. We've played fourteen of each as of last night and won 11, drawn 2 at home. Nine left and I expect we'll win most of them. Next two games could turn out to be huge. If we get four or six points from them, with our run in, I'll start to feel confident we'll get over the line.

Watford and Hull at 100/1 and 150/1 is a big statement as to the situation we are in. Just need to keep plugging away.

One game at a time. League positions don't always guarantee results. Form changes even if it is not sustained.

Stay positive but don't get complacent. There will be hiccups for all the teams and the pressure changes in the run in. Sometimes the closer you get the further it seems away. PUSB
