The other point is that even if Putin doesn't care a jot for the Russian economy, many of those around him will. Sooner or later, that's going to get uncomfortable. He might be able to take Ukraine, but holding on to it without huge casualties and vast costs doesn't seem at all likely to me...

There's absolutely no way Putin does this if Ukraine is part of NATO. An unintended consequence of this madness will be absolutely what Putin hates, NATO membership increasing elsewhere.

Politely disagree, this suits China very nicely. A weaker Russia and a distracted NATO is very handy for their global interests, imho, which is why they're staying on the sidelines. What the West does now might well influence their approach to Taiwan though...
