This was the opening game of the 86/87 season. Little did we know what was to come at the end of the season, although this was quickly followed us beating Arsenal at HR in our 1st home game.

Someone put up a joke team in the style of the official announcement which has now been deleted, It included Binks, had Eccles as Captain and a front 3 of Asante, Bassette & Wright. Saka & Andrews were on the bench!

Those pitches were the main reason so much football then was long ball.

Very poor performance against a patently poor team. We played with no urgency and got what we deserved. Bidwell and Haji had particularly awful games. Only MVE, Eccles & Saka did ok, but even then I would only rate them as a 6.

Think it was against Southampton, but deflected in off a defender. It was his only really good game for us!

I'm fine with MR getting his applause before the game but once the match starts we get right behind the team and forget MR, until after the game when we've hopefully beaten them.

Confidence issues might have also been behind Eccles not stepping up. With his recent form being a bit in and out and elements of our support picking him out as the new boo boy, a missed penalty was probably the last thing he needed.
