I think the bigger issue for me is it’s unclear how we are actually trying to score our goals. Last year it was very obvious, playing vertically and trying to get the ball into Vik as soon as possible for him to hold up or turn, then play from there while the opposition were out of position...

If you’re gonna talk about Man City, they actually play 3 centrebacks. Their formation is actually best summed up as 3-2-4-1 on paper (although it’s so fluid that means little) which is closer to what we play than a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 is.

In the second half? Maybe when we threw the kitchen sink at them last 5/10 mins but that was desperation.

Context matters. If we go in at half time 1-0 up away from home then I would expect players to be more conservative, given that a 0-0 second half means 3 points. When we’re 1-0 down and play 45 minutes without really looking like scoring that’s a problem, and players deserve worse ratings.

Also, as someone who’s had a season ticket for coming up to 20 years now, and has watched us play in Northampton and Brum, League 2 and League 1, seeing us as an established Championship side isn’t exactly the worst thing in the world…

If a new mid comes in Jan he’ll hopefully be someone who can progress the attack from deep and we’ll suddenly look much better.

Why would they want him? He was a good player pre injury but still had some pretty glaring weaknesses. After a year out injured he would have to put in a spectacular 6 months of football to get a prem move.
