Marks and Sparks

I went to Whitley Abbey in the 1970's. It was bloody rough as old boots then . No one called Mark was a Sparky. They were all "Oi Mark you f*cking twat" or similar. Never heard of Marks being called Sparky.Soz.

I must be the only person who doesn't know the answer to this : why is he called Sparky ?
