The frustrating thing is she could have framed it slightly differently and it would have been completely water tight. Instead of “the public” it could have been “many people” or “polls suggest”.

Clinton was an awful candidate and certainly the largest factor. But there’s no point people burying their head in the sand that social media might have been an influence because it’s awkward and uncomfortable to accept that.
Anyway, it wasn’t really the main point in my original post and not...
Laughable deflection.
Good way to point out how close it was though and how a few tens of thousands of votes changed the outcome.

The use of social media disinformation is widely understood and researched. I won’t drop it because it makes people uncomfortable. In no way was I stating it was the instrumental factor but it certainly may have had an affect.

Had temp checked at work with a thermal camera last week, needs to be done everyday though, IMO. Doing schools will have the resources for that and government advice will be “wash your hands” and hope for the best.

The failure of Cummings' British culture war
Some good points here and reasons for hope. They managed to use post truth politics, a culture war and Russian bot networks to get the brexit vote - just. The Cummings debacle and the pandemic generally is showing that can only take you so far in...
It completely undermines the basis of law and the written and unwritten norms that are the basis of a functioning society. It’s turning the ‘rights of the individual’ of conservatism into anarchy.

It can be a toxic and horrible ideology. It’s why they need the culture war though. If you convince enough people that immigrants or gay people are the issue or “the left are destroying free speech” you can distract them enough to not see how they are played.

Was looking at twitter last night and the bots and boomers on twitter now seem to be taking the line that the left control the mail.

What sources are you suggesting?
I’ve had a look at the WHO website and can’t see anything suggesting there won’t be a second wave.

I think what she is trying to say there is we now know how to control it and this will prevent later waves being as serious as the initial one. It seems to be being read as “there won’t be a second wave so open up” but in reality seems closer to “there might not be a second wave if we continue...
And where are you hearing about these positives if not the media?
It’s been all over the media in the last few days that deaths are drastically down throughout Europe.

From what I can see the WHO are saying globally we are still in the first wave and if countries reopen too quickly there will be a second wave.

I was tempted to reply with something like “should they just throw any journalist who asks an awkward question into a gulag?”
What can you do though? There’s no reasoning with anyone these days.

Yeah politically seemed like the obvious thing to do.
Starting to think they’re trying to use it as an opportunity to galvanise their support against the media.
