    5 at the back?

I’ve only seen Derby’s second goal live and the posts obstructed my view, have you seen anything conclusive on social media (or Sky) which shows the ball out of play?

    Why

Why can’t we just accept it when it’s just a bad game? It was just one of those nights for us. You’re asking me for metrics on a players who’s played 20 minutes for us. Why do I like it? He’s on short term contract, with presumably low wages and he’s a proven Championship player, so it’s...

    Loyalty Point Bands

Given how games make general sale, this simply isn’t the case on the scale you’re suggesting. Is it true for Luton and Plymouth away and other sell out games, probably. It doesn’t take that long to build your points either, I only started doing away consistently for over a year now and even...

    Loyalty Point Bands

My brother’s ST points is about that much and the ticket has only been used a handful of times for away games and the we didn’t get a ST for 22/23. If anyone is complaining about points, it tells me they’ve probably only recently got a ST and/or don’t really do that many away games. Which is...

    5 at the back?

That’s right, but need goals to win games and without Rudoni, Sakamoto and EMC, who’s creating chances? Taking a step back, 2 of the goals shouldn’t have counted (Oxford’s 1st, Stoke’s 2nd) and playing 3 CBs doesn’t automatically resolve set-piece defending which has accounted for half the...

    5 at the back?

It’s one loss Gibbo. We won 3 on the bounce playing 4-3-3 and because we lose once, it’s all doom and gloom. We lost 2 in 5 when we first adopted 5-3-2 under Lampard. In the 8 games before we switched to 5-3-2, we conceded 10 goals which is 1.25 goals per game, including 3 clean sheets. The...

Match Thread Coventry City - Sunderland Match Thread - Saturday 15th Mar

Agreed and we tried to be too clever last night. The amount of times we ‘cleared it’ to their players was unbelievable and whenever we had good chances to get at them, we either dithered on the ball or made a mistake. I’ve got two examples that summarises this. First half - the ball was...

Match Thread Coventry City - Sunderland Match Thread - Saturday 15th Mar

Different players on the pitch and a different manager, you can’t put too much on form earlier in the season. Derby had 3 shots on target against us over 2 games and scored 4 goals, statistically it’s an anomaly and we’re just unlucky. Looking at the goals conceded, 3 were set pieces so the...

Match Thread Derby County - Coventry City Match Thread - Tuesday 11th Mar

All of the back 4? That’s a bit drastic. When we got the ball out wide, we didn’t make an effort to take players on to pull Derby out of their shape. Something Rudoni does well is attracting defenders to him and this creates space. Torp and Eccles were off their game too on the ball, far too...
  10. Mucca Mad Boys

    Why

The club probably wants him to prove his fitness and worth before dishing out extended terms. After all, he’s barely played in the last 9 months.

So we’ll play a team in 4th place without our top 3 assisters? We rely on crosses in the box for chance creation and Torp/Allen don’t really give us this. Without Rudoni, 5-3-2 isn’t tenable.
  12. Mucca Mad Boys

    Why

What did people expect from a player who’s barely played competitive football in 9 months? He may have signed with a view to next season if we’re in the Championship. It’s a decent signing, people’s expectations are just inflated.

    Ellis simms

Agreed. Whenever he knocked the ball down, there were 2-3 Derby players closer to him than one of our players.

It was Haji’s first start in 4-5 months, it will take time to build the sharpness back. I doubt he would’ve started had it not been for EMCs injury. I did find it odd that he took Simms off because if the master plan is to get crosses in the box… why did take off our main aerial threat? We...

    5 at the back?

We scored 10 goals… how many were assisted by Rudoni? The way the CMs operate is similar to how they operated in the 5-3-2. In both systems, they push high up and leave big gaps between the DMs. Grimes’ is tweaked compared to Allen’s but the LCM and RCM are expected to operate the same way...

    5 at the back?

We’ve attacked more or less the same way in 2025. 5-3-2 would end up being a 3-2-5 in attack as well as playing 4-2-3-1/4-3-3. We have also leave ourselves quite vulnerable defensively with space that’s left between the lines. Even playing 5-3-2, there were many transitions where we’d lose the...

    5 at the back?

That’s correct, but we still need to score and without our top 3 assisters, you’re limiting yourself. 3 of the 6 goals conceded have come from set pieces so it’s not indicative of a complete formation breakdown. Would playing Lati for Sakamoto be worth the trade off? Not for me.

    5 at the back?

There’s a misdiagnosis of the problem. It’s not so much conceding 2 goals. It was conceding the first goal. We were obviously going to be more open at the back when chasing a goal, then two. Looking at our run of 9 wins in 12, we’ve only dropped points once when scoring first, Norwich away. The...

    5 at the back?

We won two of those games so what you’re actually suggesting is that we chuck the baby out with the bath water over one loss. Again, in possession, Grimes was stood in the middle of Thomas and Kitching. In transition, the defensive shape was undistinguishable from playing with 3 CBs. The issues...

    5 at the back?

It’s easy to knee jerk into switching to a back 3 but things could’ve panned out very differently in certain games playing 5-3-2. With Grimes’ role as a half back, we held a shape identical to 3 CBs anyway - the ‘meta’ 3-2-5 attacking shape that’s popular atm. The issue was just how much space...
