    Palm oil destruction of forests

Please sign to get this Christmas advert reshown highlighting the plight of the orangutan caused by palm oil plantations. It's been banned for being 'political' but it's a message that needs urgent attention and should be beyond politics. Great advert for this cause. Nearly a million...

    Religious bloodlust

Pakistan in turmoil because the devout want to kill a blasphemer. Hope the poor woman gets out unharmed and the brave lawyers escape retribution. Isn't religion wonderful.

    Practical jokes

Can't stand the physical ones like bucket of water on top of door, cling film on toilet bowl etc but was once involved in a more elaborate one. My brother (a builder) worked with a bloke who had a very short fuse and was notorious for blowing his top and completely losing his temper over the...

    Chavtastic!

Chav in Thailand might get ten years for graffiti on ancient monument. Pity we haven't got such penalties for the antisocial miscreants over here. It sums him up that he sprayed his own name 'Scouse Lee' (misspelling Scouse) and presumably wondered how he got caught!

    Ronaldo rape accusation

Looking a bit serious for the crafty winker. This payoff to the girl in question will be difficult to explain if true. He seems quietly confident though even after being dropped by Portugal.

    Coventry slang/dialect

Recently here in Norfolk they did a survey using 20 common local slang and dialect words to different age groups. Pretty much all 20 were recognised by the over 50s, about half by the 30 to 40s and around 3 (sometimes none) by the under 20s. They blamed the Americanisation/globalisation of the...

    Tour sponsor

Notice that the Tour is sponsored by a 'pre-owned' watch company? Obviously is wealthy enough to sponsor a major event but I'm amazed such a business exists. Who buys pre-owned watches for goodness sake?! I would have thought a play on 'second hand' would be obvious but maybe doesn't sound as...

    VAR for corners?

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but why not VAR for corners? England had two cast iron corners denied by a blind linesman in the Croatian game and given that they were a potent weapon for us it's little decisions like this that can make the difference, small margins and all that.

    Three lions and two stars

If we actually win this thing and get the extra star on the shirt, I might buy the kit just to annoy Scottish friends who think we bang on about 66 and all that. It will be such a smug fest to just point to the two stars. Talk to the shirt cos the face ain't listening :finger:

This looks like another Euros competition. Do we really need this - another chance for England to crash and burn?

    Best National Anthems

I've ranked these in order of how rousing they are combined with a great tune: 1. French 2. Welsh 3. Russian 4. Italian - once the twiddly bits at the start are finished we get the operatic soaring music 5. Irish - not bad but lacking something 6. Scots - a bit of a repetitive sombre and...

    Board games - recommendations?

A bit late but trying a bit of a retro Xmas with the family. Can't stand the tedium of Monopoly or role playing games - any good uns without too much complexity?

    Presumed consent

There are arguments about whether this will make a difference to organ donation. Can't understand it myself why folk don't donate. Give others a chance to live. If I could I would stipulate donating to consenters and not to opt-outers. Why should you receive if you are not prepared to give? And...

    Scouts

Anybody in the scouts as a kid? For a while I was in the Coventry 7th troop. Our scout hall was in Partridge Croft off Dudley Street. Most of us kids were from the Bell Green area and used to turn up Thursday nights pay our subs and have great fun playing the most terrifying games. This was an...

    annoyed that I don't understand...

The theory of relativity. Have tried many times to understand time dilation in a layman's terms rather than the maths. In other words, why does going extremely fast mean that time actually slows down for you relative to someone who is slower or stationary? Over the years I've tried to grasp this...

Radio 4's 'Thought for the Day' always makes me cringe. Embarrassing, patronising and above all dishonest.

    Welcome kissing

This is a minefield - greeting a female friend nowadays is it an air kiss? One side? Both sides? Full on the lips with tongues? What's going, we're not French for goodness sake. I've even got male friends now that insist on handshakes all round when we meet down the pub. What's happened to good...
