We don’t know the causes but
I mean, the standard ones are X goals X appearances. Entirely possible it’s 25 goals and 100 appearances. We can be fairly certain there’s a promotion clause as that was mooted at the time.
Edit: could be ‘starts’. Only 67 league starts so far; 75 including cups.

Esse has been a big disappointment. Really thought he’d be a big player for us but his impact has been extremely limited.

He's clearly got talent. But saka is keeping him out team.
He will get lots of minutes before now and end of season still. It gives me great confidence knowing whoever starts, one of them will be ready to come on from the bench.

Not 104 no. But we'd probably get close to the 100 matk this season with a striker who was powerful and had a great shot conversion rate.
Defensively we're the best side in the league, with Ipswich now a conceded goal behind having played a game less. Midfield we can play around most sides in the league, that's not where our problems lie?
Up front is where the issue is and it's glaringly obvious. Part down to striker's positioning ability, part down to finishing ability. Can you imagine someone of Vipotnik's ilk with that shot Conway had against yourselves at our place? Can you imagine him yesterday with the shots presented to Strelec and/or Browne? Along with plenty of other games where our just slamming it in the net has been the one area that let's us down?
We'll probably get somewhere between 82-88 points this season. Just having a decent finisher in the tight games or games that needed putting out of reach so the late hopeful burst from our opponents doesn't affect us points wise would be worth about another 12 - 15 points over the course of the whole season.
Of course he could get injured and/or get rested at some point, we'd expect him to miss half a dozen games on average, that's football, and we'd also be wise to take him off as soon as a game was put to bed.

You can’t take appearances you have to look at time on pitch. He scores a goal every 216 mins. It’s a good record.

It's a good point. I've just used him to suggest what having a striker with a good conversion rate with our volume of chances would likely score.
You would think though that 15M would buy you someone who had a decent rate of conversion, certainly at Championship level.
How many do you think a Jack Clarke or McBurnie would score for us, given the big boost in the amount of chances he gets? As they have a proven track record over time.

We're top of the league and theres certain things that could have had us even more top I'm sure. Its all just cope really.

I mean yeh probably, but its not like you didn't try it. Strelec cost good money and your fans were very excited but it hasn't really worked. Every club in the league will have signings they wish they could exchange for x clubs superior signing but we've all got what we've got and are what we are.

Granted every club's fans will want their side to be better, that's a no-brainer.
But all sides are going to look back and see how they could have improved on that season, as it shapes the recruitment for the next.
That in itself is not cope, it's being progressive. One of the first things that Kieron Scott and co at our own department will think is of the one area we need to improve the most and what it would feasibly add to the existing side and their stats. If they didn't then I suspect they'd be in the wrong job!
And the one area that would improve our strength the most is glaringly obvious to even the armchair supporter and given they have a manager in place with an attacking philosophy would be overwhelmingly likely the area they'd focus on the most. The same as last season it was the fullback department that we were most lacking in, so with the recruitment of Brittain and loan of Targett (who will need replacing if not acquired on a perm) they fixed that.

I'm just saying we all have it and while we all discuss it, its pretty irrelevant. If we had Onyeka and some decent wing depth from the start of the season we'd have the league won by now. Lucky we realised the problems and solved them in Jan and should now be promoted. Boro had that same opportunity and for some reason decided to put everything in the Adam Armstrong basket with no other plan if that didn't come off.

If this happens then obviously we get a huge budget increase. However we still need to be careful.
Wages rises for the current squad will eat some of the budget and if we bring in established premiership players then a) they are very unlikely to be game-changers as otherwise they wouldn't come to a club likely to get relegated b) they will want huge wages.
Instead, I'd prefer we continue the long game. Buy three or four young players from abroad and keep our expenses under control. Maybe even pay down some of the stadium loan. That way, even if we do go down immediately we have a strong financial position for the future.

I get this and it's quite true. Obviously you'd have been doing better and would already have promotion mathematically rubber stamped and with the title a possibility to win before the international break in my opinion.
With Armstrong's hot and cold record he was never the answer IMHO (especially for that fee!) and while we'll certainly have had other ideas for personel in place, it's tricky recruiting a striker during January in any case as not many sides want to lose them and the fees become astronomical? You're kind of limited to what players are actually available.
As our sale of Latte Lath bears out, a good striker at this level definitely, but not quite worth what Atlanta paid for him.
We're likely to be able to acquire a far better striker in the summer as fees drop amd there's a huge amount more on the market, owing to clubs changing leagues and needing to balance the books, etc. Or should Ipswich go up, Jack Clarke and such like may become surplus to requirements, etc. You get far more bang for your buck and much more choice? A striker who we could get for 15M in the summer would likely cost us around 22M in January, which would put him out of our price bracket. And as said, it's the glaring area we need to put right.

He has ability in patches certainly, but he's clearly too much of a confidence player, the same as Whittaker.
When he's in them, he can position himself well and has a decent shot on him. But unfortunately this tends to be for too little a proportion of the season in his case, only having this season as evidence so far admittedly. He's also not a big lump who can barge his way into the box and stick a nut on it as we're definitely missing one of those guys.
If we had his brain, with Burgzorg's physical capabilities and Matt Targett's consistency that would be ideal...Though I suspect such a player wouldn't be playing in the championship!

He signed at 22, what are you on about? He’s got one of the best gpm in the division this season. He scored 19 in his first season. More accurate to say he had an off year last season if anything. He’s a good striker at this level and one of the few players in our squad who has played higher as well. The hate for him is bizarre.
