Why would we do a deal to buy on promotion for a player who hasn't been able to hack it in the Prem? The lower Leagues are full of England youth internationals who never quite made it, we've had a fair few of these ourselves. There must be better options for the money.

He's 21, has been topping the stats in the Championship and never played in the Premier league. What evidence is there that he can't hack it and which Man City player do you think he should replace?

There are no regular playing 21 year old centre backs in the Prem, even if you look at players like Van De Ven hes considered young and is 24.

Is he a CB that has shown he's reliable in a side playing a high line like we do? In 22/23 our three CBs never pushed up. Don't get the clamour for him tbh.

Did he play left back or left centre back for Norwich? He was more of a left back at Leicester. Personally think we need a centre back with pace to play alongside Kitching.

Doyle blossomed when he joined us, under Robins. He left and went to other clubs but I do not think he grew much more than as the person that left us. Therefore, if dictated by logic he would be best suited for Stoke and work again under Robins. There is absolutely no reason for him to be associated with us under FL, is there?
No although I believe Adi did a lot more coaching than Mark so Boro would be a more logical move than Stoke if you are following your logic

Wtf do you mean, "a player who hasn't been able to hack it in the prem"

He's 21 ffs!!!!

He's rated very highly at Man City (£10m+)
And has been wanted by us Leicester and Norwich, its only been his price tag that has stopped him moving on.

If we were to get £10m for MvE (for example) then splashing £10m for Doyle, who could really improve our defence, would be seen as good business.

We'd still need to find a competent striker of course.

£5m in Europe should buy us a lot more.

He isn't fast, which could be an issue with the high line we will play.

Great on the ball and good defensively, but just not quick at all. You can mitigate that by having the keeper play higher. I'm not sure we will, but Rushworth looks like he can do that, whereas Wilson can't.

Isn't there a lot of romanticising going on with Doyle? Other young Man City defenders have moved for big fees and played in the PL in the seasons since he was on loan here, and he didn't nail down a starting spot at CB at Leicester or Norwich AFAIK.

That isn't the question though. I said why would we mortgage the future on a player unproven in the PL. That's a much bigger gamble and one that PL clubs haven't made so far!
Premier league players won't spend £10m+ on a 21 year old that's still developing.
Give him another year or 2 and PL teams will spend £30m+ on him.

Premier league clubs want PL ready players now, and will spend the big money.
We arnt in that position.

Basically, unless he's held down a starting spot at this level where he played as one of two CBs in a side playing a high line, what's the rationale for why he'd be such a great pickup? Probably a great defender but that doesn't automatically make him a good fit for us here and now.
