Whilst it's quiet, I'll put my 2 pence in....
I've seen calls for a 'complete clear out' and a new front line. Looking at the stats, only 3 other teams have scored more goals than us, defensively however we have conceded more than Hull (who only survived on GD). If you look deeper into the stats we leak from A) errors B) down the left hand side, in particular balls in behind/over the top. The main difference between us and the top 3 that ran away with it, is keeping it defensively tight. Squad wise, I'd be trying to retain as many players as possible, of course every player has a price but I'd keep the majority. We have a small squad and FL has commented on this a few times, I'm sure he will want to strengthen.
Key positions for me... (I've put a few names in but it's more the position I'd be after and trust the Cov model we opt for (lower league, younger with potential)
GK: Needs to be a classy loan signing for me, Dovin has quality and we've invested in him, has a long term future post injury so no need for permanent move. Won't be available until January and then it will take time to get back to full speed/confidence. I'd highly doubt it but a player such as Kinsky from Spurs, solid save percentage, confident and vocal, unlikely to play ahead of their number 1 and still wanting game time. For me that's a crucial position. Again not saying it needs to be him just a player of similar ilk, needs to be a top loan.
LB: Seems like Brau is coming. Not familiar with him but let's hope he's of a good standard. Kesler-Hayden another name bounding around can also play here (fingers crossed MVE stays).
CB: I like Thomas and Kitching and if they can clean up from defensive errors we'd be okay. That said I'd be looking to bring in a player of quality (Dunne is a free, Jack Stephens also - he's not had a great season but Premier league experience and was solid for Southampton for the year in the championship).
Forwards: Happy with our starting options, what I do think we need to bring in is variety, we play a possession based pragmatic approach and if the likes of Sakamoto isn't working and defensively they've got it locked down, then we need a different profile player to come on, perhaps a stronger faster more direct option (something all the top teams have in their locker). We had games during the season where we held 65% possession, dominating the game but have no outlet. I know I'll get slated for it but Bundu (again on a free) is a player that could give us options on how we progress the ball/be more direct. Stats wise it gives us options (can play RW, LW, ST - much more direct, yes not the typical profile we go for but I do think it would work. I'd also like to see another attacking midfielder that's again a bit more direct and tricky, just to give us some options to flip the game on it's head.
