I think it makes sense but Reda did seem to galvanise the team and his absence was noticeable. But aaron Martin can't be considered a first choice CB.

Maybe he could be on a pay-as-you-play deal. He may finish up owing the club money!

He is a decent player when he's fit, but he's no good to anyone playing less than 50% of the games. His appearance record has been so poor over several years that even if he left, whoever takes him on would probably want wages linked to appearances.

I can see it being lower wages but an appearance bonus or something. That would work out better.

It appears he CT will have to find themselves a new 'talisman'.

At least we should know either way, in a couple of days max. There must be some kind of pull for him to even be in talks... Either that or no-one has come forward in the early stages of pre-season and he's panicking.

If we can get Ricketts, I doubt he will be missed. Having both would be brilliant mind.

[h=2]Sky Blues boss admits the deal for the former Sheffield Wednesday defender is hanging by a thread[/h]
Tony Mowbray hopes to get a final decision from Reda Johnson by early next week after the pair held face-to-face talks at Ryton yesterday.
The Coventry City boss remains hopeful that the 27-year-old defender will commit himself to a new contract but it’s clear the deal on the table doesn’t quite match the defender’s expectations.
“We had a good talk and I sense he would like to come back to play,” said Mowbray.“There are just some details that we need to try to sort out. Read into that what you want but I would be pretty hopeful that we can try to find a solution for it.
“Things are financially tight and we’re trying to build a team and it’s no good having Reda Johnson and nobody of the right quality around him – you can only spend the pound once so we have to make sure we make the right decisions.
“Nobody else has one talented boy in this league in one position and no-one else to score goals or cross a ball, for instance.
“I’ll keep that conversation going but hopefully it will come to a conclusion in the next few days – by early next week he’ll either not be coming or signing and we’ll be pushing on in training with him.”

Asked if he’s set the Benin international a deadline, Mowbray said: “We’ve already had that a little bit. That’s why I stopped contacting him and it went a bit quiet because I can only talk so much to his advisors and even to him while we were on our separate holidays discussing things.
“My communication line stopped with him until he came to see me yesterday.”
And the manager is hoping that seeing the new spruced up training ground, seeing the players and hearing about the calibre of player he’s trying to attract will have whetted the big man’s appetite to get back on board with the Sky Blues.
“I was pleased he came in to see us because he could see the difference we’re trying to make at the training ground, our mental approach, attitude towards some new players and hopefully a winning mentality,” said Mowbray.
“We’ll all be disappointed if he doesn’t but let’s wait and see.”

Does this say he has been offered reduced wages?

No, to me it reads more like TM isn't prepared to pay more. Let's be honest Reda we hardly got value for money last year. You can't guarantee us a full season with your career stats.

It didn't but it implies that the salary on offer isn't what Reda wanted as TM said:

Very few. Division 1 players on over £3k a week imo suspect a lot of wages are linked to on field success, possibly appearances and so they should be

I remember a reserve, reserve keeper a few years back, in this league telling me they were on 1.5k a week, the same for a first team appearance and the same again for a clean sheet. So if they could potentially pick that up, I'm.sure Reda could get 6k. Maybe as part of clean sheet/appearance and goal linked pay.

I would honestly say £6k mark maybe slightly more & our highest earner, he was SP big signing last summer, fact he was given the captaincy as well.
No way £6 k a week , would say 3.5 k max , and I would think we have offered him around £2.5 k a week now ,

I wonder who the signing that never was is. Looked certain to sign and then moved for "a couple of hundred pounds somewhere else"

By Andy Turner | 03/07/15

Tony Mowbray is closing in on experienced campaigner Sam Ricketts but has missed out on one of his leading summer targets.

The Coventry City boss says he is “hopeful” of completing the signing of the 33-year-old former Wolves skipper but conceded that the club have been beaten to the signature of another key player in his plans by a League One rival prepared to pay higher wages.

“I had a disappointment yesterday from one player who I thought was coming but is not because he has got a few hundred pounds somewhere else,” said Mowbray.

“When you get that call from the agent after you’ve been pushing so hard, meeting the player and getting positivity and then someone else in this league can pay a bit more than you it’s frustrating.

“What can I say to them apart from, 'good luck, I hope it goes well for you'. I’d have preferred him being a Coventry player but that’s life and we’ll do our best with what we have got.

“It has been a bit frustrating not being able to get players over the line so that others can see that Coventry are going to have a go this year.

“It’s not been through a lack of trying but the type of quality we are trying to attract doesn’t just jump at the first offer that comes along.”

The Ricketts deal is understood to be dependent on the finer details of the package City can offer the versatile defender who can play anywhere across the back four and also in midfield.

Reda Johnson is another signing waiting to be done but understood to be stalling due to personal terms not being quite right for the player as Mowbray attempts to build a team on a limited playing budget, understood to be around the £2.5million mark.

“Whether we will be competitive, time will tell, but I’d hope so,” he said.

“Sitting here with just a little bit more I feel we could almost guarantee some level of success but we are where we are and we have to try to build a team bit by bit.

“We aren’t going to be at our strongest at the start of the season, as a lot of teams will at this level, but I’m sure we’ll get stronger as we go on.”

Would like to see a fully fit Reda with Ricketts but think he's going. End of the day if we wants more money off you go. Impact player, little wreck less but made a difference, but very injury prone. I wouldn't want our highest earner on the medical table all season!
