Players who maybe should have stayed (1 Viewer)

Which players do you consider played their best football at Cov City, before they moved on to what they considered to be better things. Maybe they did go on to get paid more, and therefore could afford better women and better hair cuts. Those players who you think that when they look back, maybe, just possibly, think, I should have stayed at Cov.

My initial thoughts are Terry Gibson, Dion Dublin, Richie Partridge (was a loan), Mifsud, Konjic, Jay Tabb, Elliott Ward.

Mifsud is the only one surely? Didn't play for a decent team again after us due to his agent

They all spoke to Sally, she warned them to go before the shitstorm arrives!

Robbie Keane left before he was ready for a big move.....especially with the language barrier and more. Life abroad must be lonely when you go by yourself and can't speak the language.

True. He did very well at Spurs afterwards though, so I guess that's the part of his career that he will look back on most fondly.

Despite breaking his neck, Dublin had a pretty decent spell at Villa didn't he?

The Mifsud one still baffles me. I'm adamant that Coleman coached any ability he did have out of him.

Dublin played slightly more games for Villa than us, and scored a dozen or so less goals. I think he was held in more regard here (obviously before he left), I suspect if he were asked he would say he enjoyed his time at Norwich the best.

He was forced out due to what he was getting upto away from Football.

Noel Wheelan has to be in contention.

Gary Mcsheffy when he went to Birmingham

Whelan may wish he hadn't left, but I bet he wishes he didn't put his foot through a window slightly more. Shame as he had talent, and although his stats look pretty good for us, I was never really much of a fan of his.

Konjic, bless him (one of my all time favourites), probably went at just the right time as I think he was just getting past it. Dublin is looked on fondly by villa fans (and why shouldn't he after my one of my favourite moments in football... Savage)! Mifsud baffled me also. The ones I'd love to have stayed are huckerby and boateng (although neither did badly after us). On a different note, I'd also have loved Roland Nilsson to be given a whole season as manager.

Back in the day Ian Wallace springs to mind...became something of a £1M misfit at Forest and never really recaptured the form of his city days. David Thomson to a degree too although the reason why other than a decent spell at Blackburn he never really fulfilled his potential was down to rotten luck with injuries. Cracking player though and still one of my all time favourites to wear the shirt...

All good shouts above chaps. In more recent times, I always wished that Dennis Wise had given us one more season. He was an absolute diamond in the half season we had him, although he probably couldn't have topped the most prolific 6 months of his career!!

The big one for me was Robbie Keane. Losing both him and Macca at the same time killed us. I'd hazard a guess that we'd have given staying up a better stab if we hadn't cashed in and replaced him with that feeble poisonous little toad from Norwich!

Keane was very skilful, scored a lot of goals for Spurs, but his record for us wasn't that great. I think he was on a different wavelength to a lot of our players at the time, they didn't play enough of the right balls at the right times to him, and that led to him being ineffective in many games. Obviously when it all clicked together it was great to see.

why all the pointless threads?

Please elaborate on why this thread is pointless?! Perhaps you would like one on 'how much we hate SISU'? Or maybe 'if we came back to the Ricoh would you go'? Would something like that float your boat a bit better?! We've only had a few thousand of those in the past 12 months.

This is what we should be talking about. It's refreshing to talk about football related matters, especially fans opinions on the past.

I'm not sure ineffective is the right word? Him being a cleverer footballer than most in our squad at the time wasn't his fault, and I have so many good memories of him that season. He also did his lions share of tracking back and defending. Best footballer I've seen in a city shirt. I'd give anything to see 1 oggy in goal, 4 Roland Nilssons in the back 4, 4 mcallisters in midfield and 2 Robbie keanes up front!! Maybe as a football club we should start genetically engineering, it might save money on the long run...

Whatever happened to him, was a cracking little player for us.

Think his career took a downward spiral? Injuries maybe, but last I heard of him I think he was playing for Chester or someone like that? Cracking player for us, so exciting to watch.

Yeah, there was a game on Sky a couple of years back and I think he was playing against Leeds for Chester or someone like that. Really, one of the most skilful players I've seen.

I really have no idea how it happened. I remember one goal he scored where he just ran down the left wing from our half, cut in and blasted it round the keeper! Memories a little hazy, so it may not have been that good but he definitely should've made it at a higher level.

Mifsud is the obvious one, McSheffrey possibly but he did have a reasonable spell for Birmingham to begin with, I still don't believe he wanted to go anyway, club wanted the cash for him and that was that. Tabb, Never set the world alight post Cov.

Too early to say on Bigi, he's got time on his side and I hope it does work out for him.

Arguably Marlon King, we were't the high point of his career admittedly but he's struggled since he left.
