What will make Lampard leave? (12 Viewers)

long way home

FL will not be short of offers come summer, lots of them will be tempters and if it suits the family then i think that overrides the footballing reasons. We would all understand if the decision was to move closer to home and im sure vast majority would be forever grateful for the football we have seen under him. For me if he stays great, if he goes im fine with it, just thankful it happened.

He seems to have a good working relationship with Doug and a settled team around him. He has said he is happy, why rock the boat when everything is going well.

He has legendary status at Chelsea and will have it at Coventry and further cement it by consolidating premiership status. I think the aim is to get Coventry there and bed them in. It's at that point he might seek a new challenge.

Good point to be fair! I’m pretty sure he lives a reasonably commutable distance to Coventry. Does he own/rent property in the West Midlands?

It’s worth noting that Colnbrook is just as close to Coventry as it is to Bournemouth which where his family is based.

Chelsea is truly local and bigger job but he really risks damaging his credibility if he drops whatever club he’s at for Chelsea every single time. A 3rd spell in a career less than 10 years is just ridiculous. That stand point is purely from a professional standpoint point.

I mean, I've no idea what his family circumstances are, but just pointing out that there may be other factors outside of football that would perhaps influence him. I'd be amazed if he went to Bournemouth though

Pretty sure they live in Chelsea.

Everything in football is temporary. He won’t be here forever. I think he gives us 1 year in the prem. if relegated, he goes. If we do well and stay up, maybe year. Then I think he goes.

Can’t seeing buying property up here unless he’s happy to rent it out when the time comes he goes.

Bournemouth job aside (which would probably ideal as the next stepping stone (established PL side/location/less fan pressure), I think it would have to be a settled mid table team. I don't think the big teams will risk their CL ambitions until he's established himself in the PL/ If we stay up, then all bets are off.

I obviously don't live exactly where Lampard does... I wish! But I obviously drive up to Cov (or Kenilworth) regularly and it's really not that bad of a drive. I also drove to Bournemouth recently and that was significantly more painful, took a fair bit longer in the end.
I assume people just think "oh its down south so it must be closer." It really isn’t.

The Bournemouth manager leaving because they are at the top of their level, probably above it, which is impressive but … have no fans, tiny stadium and no ambition/funding to push on … what’s the point in Frank taking that on? In some ways is hiding to nothing…

Bournemouth are expending their stadium to 20 k , but I think as a club they are at the top of their level .

I’m sure that it was published somewhere that he commutes from Colnbrook but haven’t found anything.

For a lot of managers, they crack on with it. Neil Warnock’s family were based in Cornwall when he was manager at Middlesbrough-Lona.

Yep I know that area well- essentially Slough ( but uber posh)

An hour and 40 down the M40 if traffic is behaving. I bet he is home a fair bit during the week.

I'm sure I read that one of his daughters is a student at Oxford and drives up and stays with him a night or two each week.

I read somewhere the other day that Chelsea might be in for him. If that happened I could certainly see him going back there.

One thought that occurred to me is Spurs, if they go down. He has just proved that he can win promotion from the Championship playing attractive football.

I can't see him going back to Chelsea . He must know a few bad results and you are out, Chelsea at the moment are paying 30 million plus to ex managers and coaching staff.

He is savvy and ambitious. When he joined us he said "one thing he has learnt is the support has to be right off the pitch."

He needs some reasonable success in the Premiership. He can't afford the label, of he is just a Championship manager and can't do it in the Premiership.

If the right offer came in, to manage a better squad with the right funds to improve it, I think he will take it. As much as I think he likes it here, if he feels he has taken us as far as he can because funding will restrict him. He will go, he is ambitious. Who would blame him. Jimmy Hill didn't stick around and took the easier money from broadcasting.

He’s worth £75m - buying and selling property isn’t going to factor into it.

When he came here he said it was not about money, I don't need the money. But I need to be busy, I need the competition, I need to push myself. I'm ambitious.

In an ideal world he will stay a couple of years establish us a a premier league team whilst we win the FA Cup, Title and then the champions league , then take over from Tuchel .

Lets just give him some time and grace and not sack him the minute we struggle like that shower up the road who sacked their manager a few months after pulling off the biggest miracle in football

That’s not what I said. Someone said about buying property up here to show commitment to us, to show he is invested but I don’t agree he needs to. Football mgmt is temporary. That was my point.

You don’t know his finances do you. Worth and cash flow are too separate things.

Agree, he did and he has said it again. In saying that, buying property in the area does not show any commitment to the club. We all do things that work for us. Not a reply to your comment, it’s a general view point.

Yes I totally get that. His life has been football, he knows football. If the right offer comes in he will leave. If it doesn't he will stay

He is an intelligent bloke and has looked after his money. If he sees a way of investing it he will do it. Lots of players develop property portfolios around where they have played. Or just where they see an opportunity.

Am guessing that suited the family just fine … even better when he was at Aberdeen
According to his autobiography, he made it work and would go there often - he probably would’ve lived an hour or so from Boro to cut his commute ever so slightly.

He was a grandad so sounds like he ‘suffered’ the most being away from everyone rather than his wife/adult kids.

Yes, I can’t see him going to Chelsea, but let’s say a Crystal Palace came in for him… His stock is high at the moment, but would sink if (as is very possible) we struggle and are relegated. He may well think that keeping an established team in the Premiership would be more likely and would suit his long term goals. It would be a big shame, I think he has a genuine affinity with the club, players and fans, but football is a tough business where self preservation/advancement often trump loyalty. i do really hope he’s here next season and achieves his aims with us.
I think the fall out between Palace and Glasner might make him think twice.
