Newcastle goal ruled out because the scorer was shoved into an offside position by a City player.

So, surely it's a foul, then?
Ball wasn't in play, ref can't give a foul. Best Newcastle could hope for is a retaken free kick but no ref is giving that. The level of contact is no different to what you see at every single set piece (from both attackers & defenders).

I watched second half of Man City/Newcastle and the way Man City played out against Newcastle's high press was very impressive. No panic, no hoofing the ball up the pitch, quick movement & passes and there always seemed to be someone in space 35 yards from goal to turn defence into an attack.

So what we're saying is the tactic for defending free kicks should be for defenders to stand non-goal side of the attacker and then push them towards the goal. They'll be offside every time.

It's genuinely embarrassing how even the commentators don't bother learning the laws of the game. It's a penalty whether Bassey was in an offside position or not.
