Transfer Rumour Romain Esse (9 Viewers)

Sick Boy

Clearly Rom is a very talented boy, but sometimes it feels he does tricks for tricks sake, and it's annoying.

Yesterday, Tats retained the ball fairly well and got the ball in, delivery was a bit suspect at times, yes, but at least we got the ball in, Esse just needlessly gives the ball away trying to be too elaborate.

Hopefully we start Tats and EMC against Middlesbrough, presuming EMC is fit, and then bring Esse on to cause havoc later in the game.
Sakamoto has been pretty much ineffective for a while now. Esse starts for me with Sakamoto off the bench.

Very technically gifted. Absolutely no football sense.

Doesn't keep position, doesn't track runners so seemingly can't or won't follow tactical instructions, and just wants to try fancy flicks allthe time even when they aren't necessary. Looks good on a highlight reel when they come off, really annoying for the 90% of the time they don't and he loses possession.

More suited to that tekkers shit than proper football at the moment.

This. You can find twenty of him on YouTube shorts, there’s a reason none of them are pros. Kid is a long way from ready to start at this level. What’s he been doing in training for a year at Palace? Just sat with his fingers in his ears?

Whilst I agree that Sakamoto has struggled a little of late, but I wouldn't say any more so than anyone else, and picked up a bit of form a few games ago.

I just feel Esse's more unpredictable style of play would be better suited for later in the game when it is more stretched and defences becoming tired.

Sakamoto brings solidity down the right, and then when the game is starting to open up, bang, Esse on to wreak havoc.

I agree, Sakamoto is one of few players who largely escapes any stick at all. He's a great watch at his best but as you say, ineffective and frankly frustrating for a good while now.

Really? Didn’t he set up Eccles goal at QPR? His output is consistently dangerous.
It was Rudoni who set up Eccles at QPR. Unfortunately, and for balance, even being a fan of his, Sakamoto gave the ball away that led to QPR's winner (seen them given as a foul, but didn't think so in the ground)

He was exactly what we needed yesterday but didn’t have a great game, you have to take risks against these boring everybody back teams risk free footballers like Dasilva and what MVE has become are just not needed, you can add Grimes to that pair as well.
Yes you have to take risks but there is taking risks and showboating. Sure, try a flick when you've got no other options but when you've got an easy ball to a teammate allowing you to keep possession or backheel it so it goes out of play then that's just idiotic.

Taking risks doesn't mean you have to do it every single time you get the ball.

He’s scored 2 goals in 5 appearances and had one bad game.

Disagree he’s played that well outside his goals and a couple of flicks tbh, but it’s game of opinions. Thought he was the same yesterday as he has been every other game. I think if EMC hadn’t been injured he wouldn’t be starting right now.

EMC starting on the left for sure. Esse would be starting on the right though.

Did anybody see the pass for Torp yesterday, nobody has played a ball like that all season, as for the back heel he was trying something different to catch the Oxford defense out, people need to make their minds up, do you really want our forwards giving it to the center half so we can pass it across the back or trying to make something happen.

Not everything he did came off, but we looked less likely to create something when he came off.

We had 24 shots on Saturday and 3 big chances missed (again). We can moan all we like about tactics and personnel but the chances to win the game was there. Esse missed one big chance and so did Haji and Sakamoto, a goal from either of those chances and we thrash Oxford.

Haji Wright coming in for an in-form Simms was Lampard’s worst decision to date. The amount of clear chances he’s missed has comfortably cost us 10+ points since December. Overall, a better player but the inclusion was not warranted at the time.

Don’t think that went down as an assist but fair shout, was an important contribution regardless.

He also played a part in the winner against Millwall. While Sakamoto has not contributed goals and criticism for that is valid, I think the assists stat is slightly misleading, not only because of his unattributed contributions to the winners against Leicester and Millwall but also due to our misfiring forwards who will have spurned chances from opportunities he has set up.

Like Wright yesterday to be fair, Sakamoto did well in the lead up to that.

I get why he frustrates, but he was the only one likely to make something happen for the most part yesterday.

When you have a team so compact & well organised in a low block, you need someone prepared to do something a bit different; take a man on, drift off the flank to drag defenders out of position, inject a change of pace to the slow, pedestrian passing around you.

That is also true of most players in the team. Assists and xA is one of the few stats that justifies his inclusion.

I thought he was one of the better players yesterday and should’ve scored and had an assist.

To that end, we also missed the physicality that EMC brings to the table here too. Esse will split opinions because he will do a stupid trick pass that looks stupid but he also seems to nutmeg a defender every other game.

Once he matures his game, he’ll be a fine player.

Has a genuine create spark, can see a pass but the constant messing around with it is ridiculous. Luxury player at the moment.
