I think you've got to look at the trend. You're going last 20 years but that's a huge timeframe. The trend is clearly for fewer non-parachute clubs to get into the top three if you look at last 5 (100%) and last 10 (70%). Ultimately we are playing in 2026 not 2006. The game has changed.

This season is an anomaly in recent times, if only Ipswich finish top 3 it will be the first time in 6 years that's happened. And Ipswich aren't even in the top 3 right now. If they fail you're going back 15 years to get a similar season.

tbf Ipswich are the only team not receiving parachute payments to be automatically promoted in the last 5 or 6 seasons I believe. Play-offs is more of an equaliser. If two of us, Middlesbrough and Hull go up automatically it would be the first time in a while that no team in recipient of parachute payments has got promoted automatically. It is a bit of a stain on the league.
