These are the same people who say they don't want Russia as a neighbour...when they're only 4Km apart.
same people who say Putin/russia aren't really a threat and should be given part of Ukraine and then everything will be great.
Same people who want to strengthen US economic relationship with Russia. All these people are dominated by a commercial mindset rather than a geopolitical/diplomat mindset.

Believes is an interesting choice of word there. I'm guessing there wasn't a follow up question asking Bessent if he agreed with the president.

Framing it as a security issue is crazy when at the same time you're destabilising NATO and attempting to drive division in Europe. I'm sure its just a coincidence that they are also objectives of Putin.
This seems like a surefire way to encourage both Russia and China to look to take land it sees as theirs for their own 'national security'.

It doesn't help US security, as they can do all that already under NATO, it hinders it. Only thing it does is gives the US a load of rare earth minerals.

It's this, isn't it, and that X post makes that point really unambiguously. Interesting that it comes from a Republican-leaning source (worked for McCain).

Russia's argument for trying to take all of Ukraine was for their national security. Many argue that if Russia does get to hold the territory it currently holds in Ukraine it will regroup and try and take a weakened Ukraine (want Ukraine disarmed in any peace deal and don't care about external security guarantees as they've been largely ineffectual to date)
Analysts think it's only a matter of time before they try & take Moldova.
China already in contravention of international law by claiming control of South China sea. Again many analysts believe its inevitable that at some stage they will move on Taiwan.
Only thing it does is gives the US a load of rare earth minerals.
That they can't process as China controls processing. Again (like Venezuela) many US companies unwilling to invest big money in case Democrats get back in and refuse to use military to protect investments. Also if Democrats take control of Congress in mid-terms (as seems likely) there wouldn't be funds for the likes of Greenland/Venezuela.

We all knew this would be the case, but nice to see it actually studied and reported on.

Would be good to see someone put this to him - though of course it'll just be brushed off as fake news by him and his supporters.

President Donald Trump’s duties on imported goods are paid almost entirely by American importers, their domestic customers and ultimately US consumers, a study from a German think tank concluded.

“Foreign exporters did not meaningfully reduce their prices in response to US tariff increases,” a report released Monday by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy said. “The $200 billion surge in customs revenue represents $200 billion extracted from American businesses and households.”

The study found that only about 4% of the tariff burden is shouldered by foreign firms, with a “near-complete” pass-through of 96% to US buyers that pay the levies and then must either absorb them or raise selling prices. Manufacturers and retailers are next in line in deciding whether they’ll pass along their higher costs or deal with tighter margins.

Are they even seeing an increase in Americans buying more domestically produced stuff? That was the other aim of this masterplan of his.

Shockingly, our “brilliant” NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.

There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness. These are International Powers who only recognize STRENGTH, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after only one year, respected like never before.

The UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired.

Denmark and its European Allies have to DO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you for your attention to this matter. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.

"They're talking about a very long-term, powerful lease, a very strong lease, about 140 years actually. That's a long time, and I think we'll be inclined to go along with your country."

I don't normally advocate this but I genuinely think that we are getting close to the time when someone needs to be let through the cordon and see him off ala JFK. He's an arsehole but an arsehole in a very powerful position and its a very dangerous combination for the world as a whole.

The country is more likely to have civil war between militias before then. It’d be the perfect excuse to suspend the next election.

The UK/European/NATO approach to him has failed miserably and it’s time to actually stand up to him.

I don't think we should be laughing in the face of the leader of the most valuable military ally we have. Yes, he's all of those things but I would HOPE there are people with level heads working hard behind the scenes to fine some dipolmatic sweetner.

Think that would be pretty catastrophic for all kinds of reasons

As others have said, if the United States no longer plans on being a reliable partner to its allies then smaller countries have to figure out how to decouple and scale up themselves. Won’t be easy or especially safe.

Well smaller countries but they are still 4 of the g7 and there are 230 countries and lots of allies available without russsia china North Korea and USA
One huge issue is that nuclear powers have a sort of throw everything off the table and right now nothing makes me think trump putin Netanyahu would think twice about using it

This is the weird thing about his conduct with allies and why I’m seriously starting to question whether he is losing it mentally. He has rightly seen China as the main threat to the US but his behaviour is potentially driving allies into their arms. He is playing the short game, trying to bully and threaten to get what he wants (to feed his ego). Xi and China continue to play the long game

Think really you're banking on the mid-terms making him a lame duck president and then someone vaguely competent being elected next time round.

The caveat to that is he doesn't seem to follow due process so that fact that he's a lame duck might not impact in the way it normally does but then you have to hope the checks and balances kick in and he's blocked from doing things he doesn't have the power or backing to do.
