Pretty much tied to the same playing philosophy. Stokes has always played his cricket the same way and McCullum was brought in to "complement" that style/philosophy (both appointed within a month of each other). They are a package. Its not the captain that needs changing. Its the head coach and the mindset! But you've just as much chance of that changing mid-series as you have the captain changing.

A team all the Aussie pundits were worried about their top order being out of form and generally below-par for an Aussie team.Aussies had their team playing Shield cricket, even pulled players out of white ball internationals to prep properly
Same, I passed up the chance to go in 2010-11 and have regretted it ever since. It's always been a bucket list thing for me to go to the Ashes in Australia but imagine spending thousands, if not tens of thousands, and then they perform like that.
We should probably stop fielding a Test team if we can’t be bothered to even facilitate the longer game in this country. Let another country have a go.We've also go the problem that there's not a huge number of candidates to replace these players.
System is an absolute mess. You've got players like Smeed bypassing red ball completely (although he'd reversed that decision for next season, think he thought he'd be in the England side and making big IPL money by now), any half decent player will never play a one day game and county cricket is played in April and October.
Not to mention the slightest sign of anyone being half decent and they get put on a central contract and spend years carrying drinks not playing any cricket at all. Bashir being a prime example of how to completely fuck up someone's career. Into the England side because Stokes saw a clip on social media![]()
not having that. Stokes has thrown away his wicket in poor situations as often as some of the batters. His batting record over last few years is average at best - just the one big innings against India in the summer. What Stokes does have in his locker is a few momentous innings.Stokes expects players to apply themselves like he does and unfortunately they don’t
worth pointing out the Lions are getting absolutely tonked by Australia B at the moment as well. (Bashir can't get a wicket in that game either)We've also go the problem that there's not a huge number of candidates to replace these players.

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick:"We're fairly philosophical about what we are trying to do and are obviously not quite operating as we need to. They have been better than us today and put us under a lot of pressure. It's always challenging when that happens.
"There's a lot more detail [why we are not operating] and not just highlighting one thing. We are trying to score runs when we can, and take wickets when we can. In certain areas we haven't been as good as we need to be for long enough. We'll try to do that and put it right all the time."

As for the others i don't think it's a matter of application - they're sent out to play a certain way. Root is the only one with a pass because of his standing. Let's not forget Root didn't fare well when he tried the out&out Bazball approach but when he reverted to his more natural game the runs started to flow massively.
The biggest failing of Bazball is that it doesn't allow players to adapt to play the match/pitch etc conditions. Bazball wants to take those out of the equation - good example was Pakistan tour. Smashed the first Test then blown away once Pakistan altered their approach for next 2 Tests.
Not even sure why he's batting coach apart from his own aggressive batting style fitting in with the Bazball. Certainly had a tendency to throw away his wicket in his Test career by being overly aggressive.Surely someone like Trescothick doesn’t actually believe this?
I thought exactly the same, the Boxing Day test at the MCG is one of the top things on my list. You'd just have to go out there and see it as an incredible holiday with some sport thrown in, and any kind of result is a bonus. It's always been a bucket list thing for me to go to the Ashes in Australia but imagine spending thousands, if not tens of thousands, and then they perform like this.
Exactly. Huge congratulations to EnglandIm claiming a mini victory just taking the game into day 4 !!!
