What would happen without Grimes? (4 Viewers)

We'd have to either go very direct and ask a lot more of the backline, or we'd have to stick with some combination of three midfielders with two of them sitting fairly deep. He's like an EFL Kante - coaches of his said it was like having the work of 1.5 players done by one bloke.

We'd have to swap to 5 at the back and play more like the Robins teams probably with one up top away two at home. That's a top half style of play but were short on players to make that kind of switch. Back to rarely winning away and taking risks with a light mf at home, not for me!

Hopefully we can get someone in Jan who can cover for him if he's injured or suspended.

What’s really impressive is that he was identified and brought in as it wasn’t a position where there was a consensus we needed a player.
No concensus on this forum perhaps but F.L. and his coaching team obviously saw the need.
Masterstroke signing him... like all of us I just love watching him play....we have signed some absolute bargains over the last few years for sure but Matt Grimes has to be the best.

Edit: I'm fairly sure he recommended Carl Rushworth to F.L. too.

I was talking to a fellow Cov fan ,I was amazed when he said he did not see what Grimes did or bought to the side. . Players don't have to be spectacular in that position just consistent IE Rodri Kanye, Deschamps , Makelele spring to mind

Dread to think

For all the goals we score he is the one player that I worry about the most as to what would happen to us if we lost him for a significant period

We won 9 out of10 playing 5 at the back last season and beat Portsmouth at their place playing it this season.

Excellent player. You have to have a plan B. If he were injured in an odd way I think the player most like him is Torp. But we’d probably drop Allen in.

do still feel like this captures what the mood on the internet would be if he got injured tbf. full on panic.

Such a critical player. Our most in my opinion. If he got suspended or injured who or what would be the cover? Without Sheaf nobody really springs to mind. Would it require a change of formation?

We clearly haven't got a like-for-like replacement. I guess the possibilities are Torp, Rudoni, Eccles and Allen.

I'd probably go with Rudoni as it is such a critical position. A left-field thought is Wolfenden playing centrally as a third CB just in front of Thomas and Kitching: it probably works defensively but not creatively. The fact that I even suggest it shows how short of cover we are for that position.

We simply don't have anyone remotely capable of deputising for Grimes
[/QUOTE]
Torp would be perfect for the job.
And Rudoni comes back into the starting line up.

Its the same argument that we could of had 8 games ago, "how do we cope without Rudoni?"
Well BTA steps up and we go on a record equalling winning run and no one even talks about Rudoni.

Grimes is an excellent player, but ironically the one player we missed the most when he was out was Bobby Thomas.

We'd tried to sign him over the summer beforehand...

Buy Barry bannan in January.
Can he just leave and we give him a signing on bonus?

Let’s ask AI:

Yes — in theory Barry Bannan (and other players at Sheffield Wednesday F.C.) can terminate their contract for “just cause” if wages are unpaid for a certain period — but it isn’t automatic or simple:

✅ What we know:
  • The club has repeatedly delayed players’ wages: e.g., late payments in March, May, June 2025.
  • According to the reporting, under certain rules a player who has not been paid for two months can give written notice and possibly leave the club.
  • The club faces serious regulatory action from the English Football League (EFL) for breaches of payment obligations.
  • Bannan has discussed how late payments are “becoming normal” and how it’s impacting players.

⚠️ Why it’ isn’t a straight “he can leave now”
  • Termination requires steps: the unpaid player must formally make the club “in default”, usually with written notice and giving the club a deadline to pay.
  • Even if the right conditions are met, there may be contractual complications (how the contract is worded, if a settlement is reached, whether the player wants to force departure).
  • Bannan apparently signed a new contract in August 2025 despite the turmoil.
  • The club hasn’t necessarily failed for two complete monthly payments in every case (or at least publicly confirmed) for every senior player, meaning triggering the clause may not be clear cut.
  • Legal/regulatory frameworks (FIFA, EFL) may apply but often become grey in practice, especially with football contracts and club football in England.
🎯 My assessment

Given the above:
  • Yes — Bannan could have grounds to leave under “just cause” if his wages were unpaid for two months or more and he followed the required steps.
  • However, since he signed a new contract in August 2025, he likely chose to stay for now (or negotiated something).
  • Practically speaking, his decision to leave would also depend on his opportunities elsewhere, his relationship with the club, and whether he wants to initiate the process.
  • The club’s situation makes it more likely such actions will happen — teammates could use the same route if they meet the criteria.
  • So, this means: yes, it’s a real option for him, but he hasn’t automatically left just because of delays.
So not clear.

What is clear to me is that Bannan could be a cheap Grimes stuntman. Getting a younger player to do the role is a £5m minimum spend.

I do think it’s a real possibility to tempt Bannan with a £1m if we go up bonus plus a sign on etc. £2m gamble to maximise promotion potential? Promotion worth £100m plus?

As for this “Bannan will never leave Wednesday”, how many times have players said this? Who was that blonde haired Leeds striker that was a die hard Leeds fan that went to Man U? Smith? “I’ll never leave Leeds and join Man U”, he said. Anyway.

Any better ideas?

Bannans not going to come here and sit on the bench as cover for a player who averages 40 games a season.
