Without wanting to jump in too much on either side, all of the muslim people I know are sound, but equally all are 2nd and 3rd generation of living in western culture. I think there needs to be a division in your understanding, as the upbringing will affect the thought process.

First generation are brought to believe eg that women are second class, homosexuality is wrong etc and just like propaganda in places like Russia or North Korea, they know no different, because they've not been exposed, even to simple things like girls in education.

Yes all my interactions with Muslims are 2nd or 3rd generation, through work or mutual friends and they are mostly pretty progressive,

The same views apply equally in various Christian African nations to be fair. Take a look at where homosexuality is still outlawed.

Agree but that's not what we're discussing. I think Grendel is largely correct in other countries and first gen here, over time that changes, but the 2nd and 3rd gen in western countries are tiny part of the total Muslim population and have far more progressive views.

It seems to me you're all arguing over semantics and refusing to see each other's angle. It's the same in almost every thread.

Im terms of perpetrators, there are exceptions and to coin one of my more common posts, some people are just cunts and nothing you can do about it really.

My issue is with the smearing and stereotypes when really for much of history, the ‘Christian’ nations had similar beliefs and laws. It seems relatively recently there’s been a big gulf in social attitudes.

But we cant affect what people in history did or hiding behind any belief or religion. We can affect how we think and behave today.

Also we can understand as we’ve been there and done the same things and until very recently realised that there were huge issues with the empire and slavery and medieval vengeful punishment for doing wrong things

I used to believe that progress was inevitable but Oppenheimer threw me as does the desire to reward riches and power

It is scary and depressing certain givens are no longer givens and have to be fought for
