It doesn’t really, both are trying to develop players for first team football. But it is harder at Man City because of the level they play at. So they sell more off.

Just as it is now harder for ours to break into our first team now we are in the Championship.

But if you look around the lower leagues there are plenty of our ex academy lads making a living out of professional football. Which is pretty good when the stats say, less than 10 per cent of academy players nationally, go on to achieve; 20 first team appearances or more in the professional leagues Premier down to League 2.

The academy systems around the country are a bit of a year after year sausage factory. Few achieve a contract at the end of it and even fewer break through the glass ceiling to establish themselves as professional footballers. An academy has to be judged on two levels, does it occasionally produce a superstar for you. Then, does it produce professional footballers, even if they are playing at a lower level than your own first team.

We don't sell them for millions though. That is the difference, they can sell them on for a few million a pop and that is pure profit for the PRS figures.

I've seen interviews with people who have talked about this and the profit it makes them.

Why are people so critical? He's a 19 year old and at the start of his career. We have to be thankful to Bellamy (shock horror) for putting faith in him a few months ago because I am sure that has played a part in FL keeping him close to the first team squad, it will benefit him and us in the long term. As he is exposed to player like Grimes, Rudoni and Torp he will increase his potential rather than Div 1 or 2 players, likewise being around the Wales first team squad will also impact on him. He is a very lucky boy, I hope he embraces that and gets on.

However, you can't compare him to other squad member for being light weight, ineffective and the like when he has just turned 19. Why do people think everyone should be the finished product, I don't get it.

Horses for courses isn’t it? Will depend on the players progression and what they need. Andrew’s had had some time away and with the route to first team time opening up a bit maybe it’s judged a few games here and there for us is worth more than another season away.

It’s probably not quite that drastic. If he doesn’t feature much this season you get him a loan next season. Eccles was 20 when going on loan to Gillingham.

No ones being critical at all. People are just saying it as it is, and tempering the enthusiasm of those who clearly think hes going to be the next Zidane.

The lads done fantastically well for his age and is rightly getting the plaudits, but he's miles away from being a starter here, he should be on loan where he's playing first team football every week.

Its sad that we didn't get him another club before the opportunity went, now hes going to miss out on at least the next 4 months of development.

Unfortunately, good loans seem a rarity for many of our players that go out. I don't think there have been many that have come back better players. With the squad depth as it is, he will definitely be getting minutes over the next few months, and as some have said, if he can progress proportionally, as we have seen with other midfielders, it will be good for him to remain.

True, but another loan would help his development a lot more than sitting on the bench or in the stand.

It is, but I'd be suprised if any injury crisis results in Andrews getting a game due to the loss of our starting midfield 3 and Allen, Eccles and Lats. I'd be absolutely amazed if he gets a single start between now and Jan.

But we wouldn't be having this conversation if the transfer window had been a little more productive.

And why the game needs to introduce a squad cap of 40-odd players on professional contracts and all others having to be released.

It's ridiculous that the richest teams can end up richer while poorer clubs have to fork out a fortune for players the richer teams don't even want.
