This all very dull. Far more interesting when some filthy scandal. Fair play she did the right thing in the end, I mean the Tory fella drive 250 miles for an opticians appointment in lockdown so they are all as bad as each other. I don't care for the left or right to be honest so no agenda

The true scandal might not even be the stamp duty btw. There's something potentially v dodgy going on with her house as the £650k valuation that was used to sell her share is close to double similar properties in their area.
The fundamental difference is that in opposition, Labour made a play of how they were bringing back 'integrity' to politics. Starmer himself backed himself in a corner by saying he'd sack people on the spot for misbehaving. Rayner herself called for many, many Tory ministers to resign and constantly sung the 'one rule for them, one rule for us'... Well, time to practice what you preach.
Rayner was up to something, didn't seek proper tax advice and got caught out. That fact is somehow worse - it's incompetent.
The electorate can see Labour is looking to increase taxes so when a senior government figure plays fast and loose with the laws, people aren't looking at that too kindly.
In my view, this government will start to splinter because losing Rayner is actually huge loss for Starmer.

Labour members will elect a deputy leader so this is where things may get tasty. If they elect someone who is at odds with Starmer's government record so far, it will be a source of friction/rebellion.

And let's not forget, not only did she seek to fiddle her tax, she then deliberately lied when she said her legal advisors had told her what she should pay. Then the legal firm come out and say they did no such thing. So basically saying she's bullshitting to the public.
Her actions are completely indefensible, you can only question the motives of anyone seeking to defend her.
And pointing the fingers at the tories is just pathetic when you remember that the country lost all faith in them and overturned an 80+ seat majority due to their incompetence, so why wouldn't the same accountability be applied to the deputy prime minister?

She had no where else to go.
She even tried the low down trick on blaming it on her legal advisors advice but thankfully they came out publicly and denied giving any such advice. Imagine the damage that could of done to the reputation of that legal company!

Self-referred after the story broke. Resigned before the journalists dig deeper into the sale of her share of the property to her son’s trust because outlets are reporting something dodgy is at play there.
It’s a classic case of damage control. She let her colleagues embarrass themselves defending her saying she hadn’t done anything wrong. The went on national TV to say she acted on ‘legal advice’ for her solicitors to deny that was the case hours later.
Take your pick: she lied or that incompetent that she didn’t realise what was going on. She isn’t a stupid person so it’s almost definitely the case she lied.
It’s a shame she’s had to resign because politics needs more ‘normal’ people but I’ll have no sympathy for a politician who aggressively called out peers over similar issues to resign.

This is from her resignation letter:
She was apparently advised by two of her professional advisers (one being the conveyancers who acted on the purchase of the Hove property, the other being presumably the solictors to the trust) to seek specialist tax advice but she failed to do so.
It is coming across, rightly or wrongly, as more an issue of competence than dishonesty. We may never know the truth.

Though I do note the post was vacant between Watson resigning and Rayner becoming deputy leader so Starmer might just let that situation reoccur.
Deputy PM is a different position, David Lammy or Ed Milliband anyone.
Other commentators have also speculated that the markets may force a general election if Reeves fails to get the bond rates down.
It's a shambles.

There are a few people seemingly struggling with this news, but this goes a lot deeper than left versus right or whatever.
The fact of the matter is that we have such low quality politicians, with many of them not only thinking they are above the average person, but also act with such little integrity. They have also created an environment where there is such a low tolerance for making a mistake, or having a tough point of view. If I forget to pay council tax, or accidentally drive into a bus lane - no one will show you any mercy. That’s the system our politicians built. So when they bend the rules, whether it was a mistake or not, of course the public is furious. Especially when they initially try and wriggle out of it.
Frankly, they should be a lot more careful when it comes to things like this. There are many politicians from an abundance of parties that cannot be trusted, including the Conservatives, and many of the ones found in the European Union too. There should be zero tolerance and it doesn't matter who you vote for.
