Exactly this! We are much more dominant when he’s not playing. There’s a reason he didn’t play in the playoffs and it is nothing to do with appearances.

He puts us under so much pressure against the better sides as nothing sticks to him and in turn we get pinned in. Boro at home perfect example of this. We were under the cosh second half and couldn’t get out our half.
How did that go?

He wasn't just getting 9,10 minute appearances?

Also, i don't want strikers on the way down like Morris and Moore but i'm not sure what you are basing Simms being better than them on? At least those players have a presence, Simms offers nothing.
Better non-penalty goal MPG.

I have and in 23/24 he scored more open play goals than Haji. His job is to score goals, doesn’t matter if it’s a rocket of a tap in. Before that ‘purple patch’ Robins was rotating with Godden and Simms so was disrupting both players to be honest.

People will point out that he scored 2 hattricks against weak opposition, Haji played in the same games and didn’t score.
Haji played on the left for a large portion of that. Better way would be to look at big chances missed and % conversion rate, but you wouldn’t want to do that as it would highlight Simms being one of the worst strikers in the whole league.

I’m airballing this now, but our record with Simms is actually probably better than without.

Vik has the highest big chances missed and a low % conversion rate. Does that apply him too?

Actually, Simms out performed his xG in 23/24 whereas Haji didn’t. 24/25 was obviously bad season for Simms which again, is why he gets this season to make an impact before we move him on.

Idk if you were one, but many people on here argued LW was Haji’s best position so why would it matter if he scored less goals?

Simms has played 12 minutes all season in games we won 5-3 and 7-1 and the games all but won. The fact this thread is so excitable is strange.

Go and talk about how great Haji, Rudoni and Torp were. If you’re going to moan about something, go and moan about the 6 set piece goals we’ve conceded.

In spite of, not because of.

Our record in 23/24 without Sheaf was better than with but are you going to say Kelly and Eccles are/were better players?

No, but I know someone who does @Earlsdon_Skyblue1.

You said we look better without Simms so you’d expect a marked difference. There isn’t and it’s potentially the opposite.

It’s a forum pal. To discuss things. The discussion is Simms is not good enough and stats back this up.

The only argument I had for Wright to be LW is that I don’t think he’s particularly good with his back to goal consistently enough but he’s still our best ST by a long way.

I would have Haji on one leg over Simms because if he is not scoring, chances are he’s making something happen.

Not really. There’s so many factors at play that you cannot judge a player based on a team performance.

Ben Wilson got a golden glove in 22/23, was he the best keeper in the league? I doubt he would have been top 10.

Vik offered us so much more though , he had 15 championship assists for us alone which is almost as many as Simms has scored for us in the league

Then clearly that metric in of itself does not make you a bad striker. I’m pretty sure Haaland leads the prem in big chances missed and his conversion rate quite low.

You dont need stats to tell you how poor a footballer Ellis Simms is.
Hes a nice guy, but to get this far in to a professional career with his talent, he's done very well for himself. He might find a L1/L2 club that'll pay him a few grand a week and make a half decent living, but he's not good enough for the championship. And stats wont convince me otherwise.

Ellis simms all round game is absolutely dog shit when compared with viks and hajis .

Sorry
Both players are obviously a lot better Simms that was never a serious point of contention 😂

If you’re going to say ‘x’ stat makes you ‘the worst striker’ in the league and arguably our best striker ever had similar stats… either the statement is untrue or you’re not measuring players equally.

People don’t like Simms but at the end of the day, he’s a sub. I’m more interested in the starters. Haji got injured in 24/25 pretty badly but still played 29 games and in 23/24 played 44 games in the league.

Haji is up there with the best strikers in our division, probably a Top 3 striker so I’m worried about that position. I am worried that we don’t have enough wingers and were forced into a formation change or playing players in suboptimal positions.

One of the starting wingers was outscored and shot less than a CB!

Simms scored one more league goal than said centre back

The only opinion that matters a fuck is Lampard's, and he ain't playing him.

I think we all need to bow to Frank's far better judgment

Im sure there's people on here who just want to argue the toss about anything, but there's a reason he isnt playing, and its the same reason we cant find a buyer.

One things for sure, he definitely can't play in our current formation.
He needs to go somewhere more suited.

If his agents scoped out his options and no-one is willing to offer what he's on here so he's going to see it out then I don't blame him but you can't blame supporters for getting frustrated with him either.
Who is his agent? He's letting him down I think, I'd have had Ellis out in the summer in his shoes but maybe his personality leads him to sticking with what he knows.

No one will pay him the wages he’s on now in reality.

He would be looking at Preston, Charlton level. And they won’t pay it so we’ll be stuck with him unless he magically improves 10 fold overnight.

No one blames Simms for the playoffs. How could they when he didn’t play a minute. Surely that tells you all you Simmps need to know? Regardless, result would have still been the same.

If FL, who sees him train everyday isn’t giving him game time, then he doesn’t rate him. I’m glad my eyes align with the judgement of a footballing legend and not the Simmps on SBT.

Any club in the Championship parking the bus and playing quickly on the break would really suit him, I think. It should do anyway! Look how he destroyed the likes of Rotherham and Maidstone that season. He seems to need a bit of time and space around him. I think we'll see more of these tactics a bit like Forest last season too.

The colossus Fabio Tavares managed 3 goals against Maidstone and Rotherham

Pretty sure the person that suggested "taking the forum down" actually just meant this thread? (Quite silly nonetheless!)

Anyway FWIW I think centre forward is probably the most difficult job on the pitch, and players continue to grow into it well into their late 20's or even 30's. IMO Simms isn't remotely as poor as some of the belittling comments on here suggest. He's capable of bringing much more to the table than we've seen so far, including a lot of goals, if we can rediscover the formula to unlock him. People talk about his "purple patch" as if it was an unrepeatable freak - why not talk about getting that out of him consistently? I'd be disappointed if he was moved on.
