Very good player needs to be further up the pitch. He is sometimes so deep he's further back than Thomas and Kitchin.

It’s a very easy statistic or data to check this. What you say here is very very rarely factual.

He is very deep when we are playing out from the back because he likes all his passing options to be in front of him, where he can see them. Gary McAllister was the same.

But as we progress up the pitch so does Grimes, he plays a lot of ball into the box.

With the high line we play wouldn't that indicate he's sat in the back line the majority of the time.

No issue with that as think the issue more comes from the other CM

Not when you see the Thomas and Kitching average positions. They are on average deeper than Grimes starting position. Grimes’ heatmap is virtually the same as any other DM you can find.

As you say, a DM receiving the ball from the CB’s isn’t a bad thing whatsoever, what is though is an inconsistent variation of options ahead of him.
That’s the issue, not what Grimes is doing.

McAllister played a lot further forward than Grimes does

Grimes is so deep , he's obviously playing to orders because our centre backs need help. Buy a better one and it would release him a bit.
He's our best player.

Not when playing out from the back, he used to sit very deep for us. Both move up the pitch as the team progresses. The same as Jonathan Hogg at Huddersfield and going back a few years he was one of the best midfielders in the Championship for finding pockets of space and distributing the ball.

When we’re up the pitch he’s still at the back as the heat map showed he spends the vast majority of his time in one of the three CB positions.

He plays as a third CB really in many ways and it means we need more from the Sheaf/Torp role and Rudoni through the middle.
I saw him close the Hull defence or midfield down plenty of times in their half.

The more I see of him the more I'm amazed a top end Championship side never came in for him before us.
He's absolutely outtstanding at this level.
That's good scouting for you. Understanding how much a player under the radar gives a side and then seeing how he fits into your own side. Sort of player you just buys proverbial "miles" on the pitch around him by doing his job well and calmly

The most composed player i've seen play for any team. Joined the team when we didn't know how to transition from defence to midfield. First name on the teamsheet and deserves the captains armband!
I used to think this but IMO just let him play. Leave captaincy shit to Kitch.

Only thing we need Grimes to do is keep running the midfield, not his mouth. Leads by example enough anyway.

It wasn't until far too late in the game when I realised it was the Matt Grimes song and not just another karaoke. Just belting out the original lyrics. Such a tw*t

Grimes, Rudoni and Torp were superb yesterday. Grimes is the orchestrator. He makes it look easy, effortless.

I think there’s a legitimate question over whether he can take a team to the next level single-handed (kind of why I started the thread) but he is an extraordinarily consistent player.
