Very good player needs to be further up the pitch. He is sometimes so deep he's further back than Thomas and Kitchin.
With the high line we play wouldn't that indicate he's sat in the back line the majority of the time.Does he?

No issue with that as think the issue more comes from the other CM
Does he?
Not when you see the Thomas and Kitching average positions. They are on average deeper than Grimes starting position. Grimes’ heatmap is virtually the same as any other DM you can find.
As you say, a DM receiving the ball from the CB’s isn’t a bad thing whatsoever, what is though is an inconsistent variation of options ahead of him.
That’s the issue, not what Grimes is doing.
He is very deep when we are playing out from the back because he likes all his passing options to be in front of him, where he can see them. Gary McAllister was the same.
But as we progress up the pitch so does Grimes, he plays a lot of ball into the box.
Do you watch us?
McAllister played a lot further forward than Grimes does
Not when playing out from the back, he used to sit very deep for us. Both move up the pitch as the team progresses. The same as Jonathan Hogg at Huddersfield and going back a few years he was one of the best midfielders in the Championship for finding pockets of space and distributing the ball.
I saw him close the Hull defence or midfield down plenty of times in their half.He plays as a third CB really in many ways and it means we need more from the Sheaf/Torp role and Rudoni through the middle.
