The story I heard at the time was that Lord McAlpine put the money up to buy Keane, but that he lost a fortune at various casinos and needed his money back, hence the sale to Inter.
It's almost like it's all rumours and people were dropping stories to cover up their own crimes or fuck ups.
It’s nonsense
The club got relegated at a bad time and had embarked upon this plan to move and take advantage of regeneration funding to get a new ground.
The council under Jon Fletcher actively encouraged the development. Every club at that time which got relegated had issues and we had the new ground to consider. It’s worth noting the council had rejected ground extension plans - which is ironic when you look what happened in other urban stadia where expansion was allowed.
Bryan Richardson wanted to put the club into administration and start again. The council and Mike McGinnity wanted to continue with the folly of a new stadium. You only have to look at Lord Taylor’s report on Hillsborough to show what McGinnity and his buddy Millerchip at the FA were. So the council implied he’d get the seating contract and then didn’t.
McGinnity was desperate to curry favour with the council and so literally sold every asset we had. We even had the fiasco of buying one player without a medical as we knew he’d fail it.
The club was fucked by the time we moved to the arena (round the 20th anniversary now) - the debts remained and the main creditor sat on the board
I think Ken Taylor then ran the council and was as disparaging as Fletcher. Unbelievable then than Fletcher took hold of the Trust and tried to destroy the club by weaponising it against the owners and handing back to the snakes that had bent over for the council at every move.
It’s amazing we still exist let alone be where we are and everyone should remember how the council tried to destroy the club and look at every avenue to remove it
