I will say it now and leave it there. IF Godden scores against us,please please do not applaud.
If anyone near you attempts to applaud ,please tell them in no uncertain terms to refrain.
I say this as a Godden fan. He did well for us,but that is the past.
He now plays for Charlton the only thing we want from Matt and Charlton is 3 (6) points. Thankyou.

Can we clap if he takes a corner?

He did score more for us than Samoan Joe's best customer after all.

Torp will be a star next season.
A new striker to be first choice will score
20+ goals.
Rudoni will stay
We finish 2nd
Agree with you on Torp, we were crying out for him in the play offs. I think we will see a midfield of him Grimes & Rudi against teams we dominate and Sheaf/sheaf replacement come in for him away from home

What if I want to look after him?

Stupid decision to let him go. 23 goals he got this season. Definitely would have got more than BTA. Robins truly lost the plot didn't he
Hardly stupid.his legs had gone and best move for both parties.

He wanted to go also as his family are down south and he was living in his flat up here in Leamington.

Next season I feel we need to keep to the fundamentals that made us successful, however, we need to be more flexible in our approach to some games. We cannot afford the results we had away at Portsmouth, Plymouth, Derby and Luton if we want to progress.
The sign of a great manager is the ability to adapt to the opposition where you are not streets ahead of them. We did not change against Leeds at home and they murdered us.
Newcastle have been praised this season for getting brilliant results against the top six by tactically out thinking opposing teams.
We are about to find out how good Lampard and his staff really are now teams know what to expect.

Looking at our results under Lampard, that 1.79 PPG easily increases past the 2.0 mark required for automatic promotion if we increase our points tally against bottom 8 teams away from home.

There’s no complaints with our home form under Lampard whatsoever really. There’s only game where we were outplayed at home was Leeds.

I think FL needs to change the style slightly to allow our strikers to play more facing goal rather back to goal. Playing a 433 with 2 wingers you need to play it too the wings more often rather than playing off the central striker. Forrest do this very well which allows Wood to get into the box and score from so many crosses.
EMC doesn't mind taking a defender on, Tats less so and often plays it backwards unless he is in the oppositions final third.

FOREST ffs - it's not difficult

Godden looked a spent force for us before he left. He could hardly run.
It will be interesting to see how he does next year. Godden never had pace but a strikers instinct.
Yep. Total passenger in that final season.

The guy can certainly finish but his legs have gone to the point his press isn’t effective, he can’t run the channels, etc.

I personally hope he stays in lg1 … it must be much more fun banging in the goals for a team and the fans loving you for it, than nicking the odd goal and the fans on your back a league above.

Weren't we the 4th best side in the league from when Lampard came in (and not that far off the likes of Sheff U points wise)? That is the starting point for me. If Lampard's first signing is the new benchmark of what's to come then we will be in the mix again. Not sure I see autos though.

I reckon with the right signings we can make autos.

Agreed, but small margins.
We dropped off away from home at the end after killing it with five at the back.
Sunderland's tactics against us are going to be noted by a lot of clubs who will also target Rudoni.
Don't think we need major changes in tactics just tweaking more for every game. At the moment, I think teams know exactly what to expect. Where we are way better it should not matter, but look at those last tranche of away matches. Our set plays need to improve. We are becoming too predictable.
Our wingers firing will make all the difference if they can stay fit under our current system. Tatsu needs more goals and EMC needs to keep fit.

It should be noted that the games we won away playing 5-3-2 were against teams that were generally out of form. The results v Derby, Hull, Plymouth and Luton were against teams punching well above their league position in the form table at the time.

The Sunderland tie, overall we were the better side. It was a cagey tie and the margin was MVE making a catastrophic mistake. Both games we were the better team statistically and the only period Sunderland were on top was in extra time. That’s where their freshness and our lack of options really kicked in to be honest.

We need more goals and assists in the team. After Wright and Rudoni, there’s not too many goals in the team. EMC’s numbers were encouraging as were Torp’s but both need to be consistently playing. There’s been times this season where there aren’t good options from the bench, particularly out wide. Likewise, we need a CM and/or AM with a similar profile to Rudoni so we can mix things up.

You’ve got to be excited for the season to come. We were so close this season and I genuinely think things will get better next season!

That's not true that the teams we were beating playing 5 3 2 were generally out of form.
Most of them were in typical Championship form, a mixed bag of wins, loses and draws.

And that run was incredible, when was the last time we did anything like that, was it the 60s?

We've moved away from it and Lampard is going with 4 3 3 so that's all there is to it but let's not pretend that a large part of last seasons success wasn't built on the back of that run when we played 5 at the back and averaged 2.7 points per game which was quite incredible.

We need our strikers to score the goals that Saka sets up. That's been our downfall

Sakamoto has outperformed his xA… The data doesn’t support the idea that Sakamoto creates all these great opportunities that go to waste.

MVE, Grimes (including Swansea data), Sheaf have ‘underperformed’ in this metric. Torp and EMC arguably should’ve had one more assist apiece at a stretch.

Sakamoto has less xA than MVE and EMC, for

For clarification, xA = expected assists.

Whatever all that means 😂 we still need strikers to score. Hopefully some new ones incoming.

It was incredible, but it wasn’t sustainable and there were flaws that were being picked at, hence the tactical changes.

Bristol (H) - 5 points from last 6 away games (won 4 away all season)
Blackburn (A) - mixed form, (3-2-5, trending down)
Watford (H) - same as b’burn (3-2-5, trending down)
Swansea (A) - had lost 5 of their last 6 before playing us
Leeds (H) - had just battered Cardiff 7-0…
QPR (H) - great home form (6-1-3), poor away form
Sheff W (A) - hadn’t won a home game between New Years Day and April 29th (8 games - 23rd in home table)
PNE (H) - in decent form tbf, had only lost 2 since New Years Day, a lot of draws
Oxford (A) - 6 game winless streak leading up to us, scoring 1 goal
Stoke (H) - 2 wins in 7

Dovin had 2 MOTM performances and a few more games with 8.0+ match score. Which suggests to me that we may have rode our luck at times, now compare that to Collins in goal…

This isn’t intended to be a post that is taking away from that run. It was brilliant and we deserved the results (maybe not Sheff W) because we ground through. The data metrics suggested we were generally the teams in these games too.

It does demonstrate how important momentum is in the Championship because if we were playing, say Swansea away in April (their purple patch) rather than Feb, their skid mark of results… the result may have been different.

You see that towards the end of the season where we played the ‘weaker’ teams just as they were picking up points, particularly at home.

Accentuated by some strange refereeing performances with those latter performances, but then balanced I would wager by some at home, variables who'd have thought.

Certainly the first four or five of that run were against teams in the bottom three or four of the form table at the time.

I’m really not sure how much that ten game run can be analysed, wasn’t it the first time in seventy years or something and probably the last for a while. I’m not sure chasing that again is the right answer, we need to develop a style that can beat teams that don’t come after us be the better or worse than us. I can take being taken apart once or twice a season by the top two, usually we give teams around us a good go, but Sunderland basically nullified us and teams at the bottom willing to scrap did us every time. We aren’t strong enough to sit back or inventive enough to camp in someone’s half yet. Work to do.

Which is why I don't think we should have abandoned that formation totally, I think it would have come in handy in some of the games we've struggled in away from home.
But Lampards committed to 4 3 3 so that's where we are.
Hopefully summer recruitment will help us in the type of games we struggled in going forward.
