Since reverting to a back 4 we've played 6 away games and took 4 points.
We're 20th in the last 6 away form table.
We've heavily dominated possession in 4 of those games, had the majority of possession against Sheffield U and obviously had our backs to the wall v Luton due to the red card. It isnt working on our travels.
If we play the same tactics on Tuesday I fear the outcome will be the same.

You may be right that Lampard has little room for flexibility with the current squad and he's certainly not been helped by the performances of the strikers. But we had more success away with 3 at the back and definitely think we should consider some variation of it for Tuesday, or at least be prepared to switch to it depending on how they're set up.
I have been thinking about that and given how deep Grimes sits why not effectively play him as the third CB? Worry with that is that the FB have to push forward leaving space and we saw they can cause problems in behind with pace.

I'm basically trying to pick 11 players who would be able to either set up as a 4-3-3/4-5-1 if Sunderland play more expansive or to a formation with 2 up top and someone to play as a no10 to try and break a low block should they play that.

If I couldn't do that I'd go fro broke, assume Sunderland would sit back and change the formation as they'd not be expecting it.

I understand why Lamps went for BTA. Speed, movement and into the channels but we need to understand our strategy. Do we want more balls pumped into the box in the air from the wings (seeing as we score from headers) or more in the channels inside and narrow. That would help decide on BTA or Simms
But there were no channels to run into, bassette If fit would of done a better job, sunderland We’re rubbing their hands when that team sheet went in, as bad as simms has been he’d of caused them problems with the crosses

Agree to an extent but I don’t rate Simms anyway. I tbink there’s much chance he spends 90 mins saying sorry to their centre halves

He’s only been playing because EMC’s been out But he’d of Given them something to worry about, didn’t get why we changed the team that did so well against Mboro, took a gamble and it didn’t work, worrying not the first time we’ve done it

Could FL really surprise us all and then by reverting to 5-3-2 like we did when we won 9 in 10?
Thought that but then youve got to start binks or Lati in there, makes a poor defence even worse, wouldn’t mind seeing Allen start in place of sheaf, go there with the same set up and we’ll struggle like wev,e done away all season. we had to go there with a lead, but you never know, pressures back on them, might be too much for them

We did play against Boro but Simms didn’t so I understand him trying it

I would put Allen in for Sheaf and Simms for BTA. We need more energy and presence and Sheaf/BTA provide neither.

If you can’t cope with the challenge, or even hope to make up a one-goal deficit in 90 minutes, then you may as well call Sunderland now and tell them we’ll forfeit, save everyone the journey.

Personally I think we have a fighting chance.
The signs are we’re going to play the same way as what didn’t work on Friday with the scores level.

I mentioned Man City because Pep is seen as the guru of possesion football and even he is talking of a different approach, not because I think we are a Man City clone.

But dominating possesion away from home isn't working.
Been saying for weeks that we should switch to a Burnley style away from home.
No wide men, no expansive football, sit two DMs infront of the CBs and make it hard for the home team to play through us.

I was at the match Friday night , & came away disappointed, i was one of those who thought that we would beat them at ease .
So now i have watced the game on TV again . We weren't that bad , only thing missing for me was a little bit of luck that we are used to at home , nothing went are way .
On tuesday night with the belief & lady luck , we are going to Wembley.

We remind me of how England played in big games, teams are happy for us to have the ball, we don’t create enough, haven’t got that bit of quality to put a clever pass through,

They have 90 minutes to hang on. Couldn’t do that for 2 minutes on Friday, and it was our own error that gifted them the win. So I’m still in for a city win.

Yeah my thoughts too really.
I'm torn between thinking if they sit back again, it'll be better for us or would I prefer they come out and attack as they're at home.
I just don't think they could park the bus for another 90 and not concede

Lampard has been here before with Derby when they went into the game a goal down in the Frist leg

I trust we will give it a go, get a goal early doors and then that will put the pressure on them to change tactics

Confident we can take it to extra time, after then who knows

Well hopefully but I think that would be a mistake on their part. But that's their problem.
just the timing of that second goal, pretty sure if they scored that earlier we’d of got a 2nd We played ok. The only annoying thing was all the balls into the box they cleared seemed to go to their players, the only time it didn’t it fell to,Allen at the end and nearly scored, play the same again and you never know, pretty sure we’ll score just hope it first then game on,

I'm pretty sure they also went a goal down in the second leg as well.

And what’s happened to sheafs shooting, the way we play we’re hoping balls drop to our players on the edge of the box, he’s had loads of chances and he’s been awful, but he’s not the only one, wright and simms have been so frustrating, that was embarrassing from wright on Friday, huge game and never looked interested,

Because he’s literally just said he’s planning to turn off!

I took that a a sarcastic response to your 'any plans for Tuesday' remark.

He's been pessimistic since Friday, (so was I but a bit more hopeful now), don't see what the issue is.

If we do come through the play offs most of us will be expecting to get spanked nearly every week in the top flight.

Believe it or not, my suggestion to watch Liam Neeson performing as a Scottish national hero wasn’t all that sincere either.

I would say that predicting defeat against the combined might of the Premier League is a bit more grounded in reality than writing off our chances of winning away at Sunderland.

But I would say predicting defeat in a game where you're starting from a 1-0 deficit having took 1 point from 15 in your last 5 aways isn't some illogical doomsday scenario either.
