2-2 Va Bristol City. Vs Sunderland (If you feel aggrieved).

3-2 West Ham. 1980 League Cup SF. First leg. Garry Thompson. West End. OMG.

I enjoyed the west ham game a few years ago. Extra Time?

The Sky Blues came out on top in this thrilling festive fixture at Highfield Road, adding to Gordon Milne’s side’s growing reputation for attacking football, months after the famous last day escape from relegation against Bristol City.

Coventry City had gone 5 games without a win, and with Jim Holton and Mick Coop injured they had to play Terry Yorath and John Beck in defence, while Ray Gooding made his first start of the season. Barry Powell scored the opener from the spot (City’s 500th First Division goal), then Ian Wallace’s acrobatic bicycle kick doubled the lead. Norwich fought back with three goals before half-time to take the lead into the break.

In the second-half, Gooding lashed the ball in for his first Sky Blues goal on 56 minutes, then Bobby McDonald’s curling shot found the net to make it 4-3 to the home side. The Sky Blues had two goals disallowed before Martin Peters levelled for Norwich. With 9 minutes left, Ray Graydon headed home to make it 5-4.

There was more drama to come however, when Norwich were awarded a penalty with just 90 seconds to play. John Ryan stepped up, but Sky Blues keeper Jim Blyth made the match winning save in a sensational match.


the chronology of goals scored is not right. But going in HT 3-2 down is correct. I’m Sure we scored first.

You’d have enjoyed the Norwich game I mentioned. Typical city game. Penalties 3 or 4 Disallowed goals. Last minute penalty save by Jim Blyth.

My first game was October 1972 on my 7th birthday, but the first game I actually remember is the infamous 2-2 draw vs Bristol City.

Another match that sticks in the memory is the 7-1 defeat at WBA, my fist ever away game.

I vividly remember the Cup Semi Final vs Leeds at Hillsborough. Was standing in the home terrace and I felt a real sense of vertigo as the terracing was so steep. Felt sick for most of the game too until Micky Gynn scored.

Remember the final and feeling gutted when Clive Allen scored. The guy standing next to me said, "they're going to get ten!" I remember the steps of the terracing being really massive, like giant steps. Remember the journey there too, queuing up like animals at Cov train station in a massive shed. Also, at the tube on the way home mingling with shocked Spurs' fans who never expected to lose.

Oddly, I remember nothing of the Charity Shield.

The midweek 5-2 humbling of 'champions elect' Blackburn Rovers in 1993 felt a little surreal, as did the two victories at VP.

Went to that I’m sure we made it 1-0 in the 89th minute to hopefully win what would have been the first time at Villa Park only for them to go straight down the other end and equalise.
Oakey was a great little player being tipped for England.

If I had to chose one it would be the FA Cup semi final in 87, but of course great memories from the Final and Quarter Final too, as well as the wins at Old Trafford and Stoke in earlier rounds.

Other highlights include:

The infamous 2-2 with Bristol City
5-4 against Norwich
2-1 against Norwich to stay up
1-0 against Luton with Kilcline's late goal followed by the win against Everton
4-0 against Liverpool with Gibson's hatrick

And for personal reason winning 1-0 at Cambridge during the League Cup run to the Semi Final

The 2-2 with Chelsea and the 3-2 against Arsenal within a few days of each other around xmas were very memorable for me. There were lots of memorable games that season actually. If only we could have built on that team.
