Getting him back would be a fantastic signing

He knows the way we play, has an affinity with the club and will have definitely progressed since last being here

Would make us a lot more secure at the back, Maatsen was great going forward, but dog shit at defending

Defence was clearly the issue last year
McCallum is more of a goal threat than Maatsen. Definately has an eye for a goal.

The great chances Maatsen fired into row Z were one of the many huge frustrations.
Every f in game I was shouting keep the ball down. After the Fulham at home game thought this lad was gonna contribute alot of goals but flattered to deceive.

Maatsen has scored as many goals for us as McCallum has... in about 20 less games. Granted he has been aided by playing further forward at times, and i agree about Maatsens finishing being erratic, but McCallum isn't more of a goal threat. And I say this as a massive Mccallum fan, who is very excited at the prospect of getting him back

Hmm, Maatsen will apparently be playing for Dortmund this season and McCallum coming back here for what, the third time as he can’t get a game at Norwich?

Hardly. His one goal during his last stint with us came from a calamitous goalkeeping error. Doesn't exactly equate to him being prolific for a defender.

Seem to remember him scoring 2 decent goals for QPR in back to back games last season. I wouldn't say he has an eye for goal or is more prolific than Maatsen but I could see him matching or bettering Maatsen's tally of 1 league goal from LWB (2 of his goals came while playing AM).

We're a more attacking team now than when Sam last played for us. He'd be a greater attacking threat than in our first Championship season. Would love to have him back whether on loan or a perm.

McCallum scored 4 in 84 games for us. A goal every 1,672 minutes

Maatsen scored 3 in 39 games for us. A goal every 1,044 minutes

It’s just a woefully uninspiring signing, especially considering we’re also supposedly getting Palmer.

who were you expecting exactly?

McCallum would certainly be an upgrade on Maatsen. He is excellent defensively, and can deliver a good cross and long throw. OK, he might not have the flair, but we need to stop conceding soft goals and he would help with that as Maatsen couldn't really defend. I would be very happy with this signing. Not sure Bidwell would want to be 2nd choice unless he's been considered for the left centre back position.

His crossing was probably one of the weakest aspects of his game.

Then you have to wonder why one is apparently going to one of the top teams in Germany and the other is not wanted by Norwich? Unless Maatsen is playing further forward there?

You're assuming he'll get games. Seems like a big leap to me. If he's playing Bundesliga games this season I'll be happy for him but also pretty f*cking surprised! Assume they've grabbed him to see how he develops.

It’s a loan not permanent so presumably they’ll be expecting him to contribute straight away or why sign him

Lot of rose tinted glasses and confirmation bias in this thread. Maatsen will have a better career by far, grossly underrated by a lot on here.

I don't think he's underrated as a player. I think he was overrated as a lwb. He would be a great cam or winger.

Yes ignore Sam's record Last season.

Macallum 2 in 17 championship games last season.

Maatsen 3 in 39. And dont forget he played as an attacking midfielder at times too.

Thats an anomaly based on his career to date.

I'm basing it not a freak of 2 goals in 2 games for a defender, but based on the 80+ games I've seen him play.
