His effort or love for the club was never in question, nor was ever doubted. The split from fans stemmed from a certain section of the fanbase consistently coming out with rubbish regarding his actual footballing ability. And when questioned or disagreed with they'd throw their toys out the pram rather than actually listen to reason.

You've had fans thinking he was the best finisher at the club, incredible at link-up play, is a far better option than all of our strikers combined, is the ultimate target man or had the best touch at the club. The list goes on - I'm sure I've forgotten more zingers.

The narrative around his ability was and still is just utterly bizarre. He had none of the aforementioned traits yet fans would still to this day die on their sword and claim their fabricated views regarding his footballing ability were (and are) gospel.

Signing Waghorn and letting Biamou go was a strange decision:

It left us with only Gyok as a striker with any physicality, particularly after we also let Baka go.

Waghorn’s signing fee, agent fee(?) plus wages could have been better spent on Max PLUS a young prospect where there was at least a chance of them coming good and a resale profit. Waghorn was never going to be a player that could command a fee.

Max might well have not been up to Champ starting line up standard. But as a sub or League Cup player he was adequate. Plus, I’m guessing around the training ground he was a positive vibe player. I’ve no idea about Waghorn.

We ended up running Gyok into the ground.

That was a madness risk.

I was laughed at and given pelters at the time, but I still say, with surety, signing Waghorn and letting Max go was a strange decision.

I can't criticize Robins for not renewing Max's contract
Although his stock is high now, virtually all managers are only 6 games from the sack
Of course he did imply that Max was going to be offered a new deal but then changed his mind
That's his prerogative as he has to do what's best for the team
There is little sentiment in football when it comes to picking the team, which is as it should be of course
But there is for recognising the efforts of guys who did the best they possibly could
Max is a good guy on many levels, he even contributed to the season ticket fund

It was the right decision to let Biamou go.

We are still building a championship quality squad (we have a championship quality first team now) and you don't do that by keeping players who are below the level around.

Exactly, I still love Max but like with Shipley and a few others in the squad, we've outgrown their level now as a club and we move on.

Waghorn is a better player than Biamou with more experience at the Championship level, but I imagine injuries and possibly Covid have had an impact this year.
It's just not worked out this season with him, and he'll probably be gone next year

Lets hope Max and Waghorn are players of our past and we have moved on. We should be looking at better younger players that fit the group. Its not time for sentiment we have a better squad now than when MR let Max go, so if he couldn't get near that squad then, how a year later is he closer to it. He has no chance, nice fella, be remembered fondly by fans but FFS lets not kid ourselves, time has moved on. Talk of him Walsh is backwards thinking and if that is acted on, it takes you exactly where your thinking..

We need new fresh young eager players who have points to prove and desires to become good pros. Also a love to play the game with goals of playing at the highest level. Not old knackered, players looking for a hand out while placing a leg up on the seat in front every game from the stand.

I'd agree with that, but Waghorn on paper certainly looked an upgrade on Max, but ended up not being, and costing us a hell of a lot more in wages, signing on fee etc. I would of kept Max too, mainly as back-up striker to Viktor and Godden. As you say it may of allowed us to bring in a young striker from the lower leagues, or a Premier league loan.
