I was at WHL in February 1986 when we won 1-0 and Lloyd Mcgrath had Glenn Hoddle in his back pocket all game

Okay, we've gone from happy memories to the more negative side so I'll add in a comedic one.

Keeping on the Pearce theme…I was also there when Dion powered past him and scored, when he was playing for Cambridge Utd in the cup.
It was the same 11 for all three games but we had a league game on the Saturday where we made 1 change Ken Hale for Ronnie Rees.After the Man U game we played Wrexham and got stuffed 5-1 and on the next Saturday 1 of the best debuts you are ever liable to see MR G ,H, arrived on the scene. Heady days
Yes good times. You mentioned Ken Hale. I worked with Alf Wood who told me he knew he was about to be sacked at Walsall and rang Jimmy Hill and offered him an 18 year old Allan Clarke but JH said he had a better player in Ken Hale

I was there when away at Sheff Wednesday we sang all game taking the piss that they had bought Andy Pearce from us
I was at the 1-0 defeat away, Dublin scored a penalty via Lee Hurst. Another away game I've seen us lose to lower league teams. And on 90 mins, the Cambridge Mafia tried to get into the away pen through a side gate. Probably the most worried I've been at a game.

I was at that match but didn't see the Cambridge mafia. It was a tiny away end and I can't recall any problems other than our performance!

I wasn't there ... but I think you're right Terry, remember reading about it, was a cup game and Speedie told him why did you do that, you're the rock of the team, something like that. Think he did have another major injury, maybe that was away at Forest.

Hmm, stopper he was, but not much else to his game really. Emerson was the better player before *his* injury.
That’s what I thought. McGrath was hard as nails though. At the risk of pointing out the obvious, we had some really good players back then.

He did, before us. Had a strange career he did, League Cup final appearance too, top flight after us with Derby... but career was done and dusted at a pretty young age really!
Herts, it was on our right side as we looked at the pitch. The turnstiles were on our left side. On the right was a gap between the stands with regular fencing and a gate. That's where they appeared from and started giving it large. From the mix of the crowd, we didn't have many takers so everyone started edging left.
Funnily enough prior to this injury there were newspaper stories about him being close to getting a call up. At the time of his injury his confidence was really high and he had developed more to his game than being a stopper. When he returned from his injury, while he was still as effective defensively he didn't contribute as much offensively though.
On Mcgrath though a few more 'I was there moments':
I was at Old Trafford when McGrath put 'Captain Marvel' Bryan Robson into the fence at the Stretford End which first broke his shoulder.
I was at HR when in consective weeks we played Liverpool & Man Utd with their new wonderkids, Steve McManaman & Ryan Giggs. McGrath was moved to full back, but he put lusty challenges on both early in the game after which neither contributed much, and we didn't concede in either game.
One of the 'I wasn't there moments' I gladly missed though was McGrath's debut - I'll leave that for someone else to explain, who might have been unfortunate enough to be there.
I was there (somebody please tell me they were too) when the away fans were put in that pen in the Spion Kop (nearest the main stand). I'm 90% plus sure it was against Everton and there was a mass snowball fight on the kop. May have been late 70s, possibly early 80s (I have a book somewhere that ought to help me pin it down!) I've mentioned it before on here, but don't think I have seen anyone else recall it!

Maybe by the time that happened I was already near the exit on the left feeling despondent about our display
I think the away fans were in there in 87/88 for a few seasons and maybe before as well. I remember waiting for a Man Utd supporting mate to come out after they'd beat us 4-1 when Drinkell got a rare goal

I loved McGrath but cannot imagine him playing for England. A great defensive midfielder but no real talent on the ball.
Yes fortunately I wasn't there for his debut. I am not sure according to reports that he was a major factor in the scoreline.
Did see his cracking goal at Watford just before the Cup Final.
