But we were on a real downwards curve at that time, rock bottom. Obs, RS was terrible, as we all knew before we'd played our first game with him in charge. But Coleman had backing and pissed it up the wall without a clue. Nothing I have seen him do since has changed my opinion of him.
Rock bottom you say but just 1 pt off safety or something. He's the worst for me.

Or thorn who was just out of depth but sisu stopped strengthening team too that season so double whammy

Coleman shoukd have done better but least we flirted with playoffs. Not happened much in championship!

We beat Peterboro on the Saturday to go 7th then Plymouth as mentioned week later, then played Cardiff on the Tuesday. Went 1 up then lost 2-1. Apart from the Desmond at Leicester, we imploded and it resulted in Coleman's 90-min resignation letter... The shitshow on the last day against Watford.

Coleman had more money than any other manager in our history. Imagine now if that money was given to Robins

lol is that a joke? I doubt actually he had any more money than Robins in terms of transfer fees and certainly a lot less than some before him

He really didn't. The most heavily backed managers we've had are Atkinson and Strachan. Probably in net terms Atkinson by a long way as Strachan was allowed to spend but also made some high value sales. Atkinson spent £18m at the time when our transfer record was £2m when he joined.

No denying Speed laid the groundwork, but Coleman came in and changed system to 5-3-2.

They had a solid setup, and had the likes of Bale, Williams, Allen and Ramsey who were all playing well. I had the pleasure of watching their 3-0 over Russia.

They got to the semi-finals of the Euros, credit is given where it’s due. Coleman deserves respect for that run.

Deserves respect for scraping past Andorra with a Bale free kick

In fairness to Coleman, he did a great job at Wales. However, his career before and after his career highlight has been pretty mediocre - at best.

By all means, I think Coleman would be a great appointment for Sheffield Wednesday. For us.

He was gifted that Wales side they were flying

Trevor Brooking had us down as dark horses for the title, first full Atkinson season. That went well...

Frustrating thing is we actually bought at the right time, just before prices seriously escalated. But we bought so appallingly, we ended up with a more disjointed team, and higher wages to service at that.

Awful.

As a boring aside, I think the “undisclosed” figures balance each other out.

Ins (estimates)

Cranie 400k
Deegan 80k
Mcpake 120k

Outs

Tabb 500k
Grey 200k

What has changed over the years is the signing on fees.

Out of contract players in demand now often want a signing fee which can be as much as a transfer fee in effect.

The pointless point I’m making is that it’s hard to actually tell with accuracy who’s had more money to spend

Not a cat in hells chance of keeping them up, will probably have the same impact as when he took over at Sunderland.

Good luck to Chris if you need an assistant can I recommend a slightly overweight man wearing a cap last seen hanging around the Stevenage area.
